Get Organized for Moving
by Sandra Walker

Description: Moving? Tips for getting organized to move.

You’ve found the perfect house, been approved for the mortgage, and now it’s time to get ready to move. Moving can be stressful and unpleasant, but planning ahead and getting organized can make it less stressful and more pleasant. Here are some tips to help:

First, make a “to do” list. Write down everything that needs to be done for the move. Keep the list with you at all times, adding to it as needed. Remember to cross things off as you accomplish them.

Next, get rid of as much as possible before beginning to pack. Anything that is broken, doesn’t fit, or is no longer useful should be thrown out or given away. Make note of items given to charity, for tax purposes.

Pack a kitchen survival box to be unpacked first upon arrival in your new home. Include things like paper plates, cups, paper towels, utensils, dish soap, salt, pepper, sugar, coffee and creamer, scissors, first aid kit, can opener, flashlight, screwdriver, hammer, nails, broom, dustpan, and food for your pets as well as their food and water dishes. Make a bed/bath box with sheets, pillows, towels, shampoo, soap, lotion, shower curtain, and medications for all family members. Also include several lamps, a telephone, and phone book for the area that you’re moving to.

Clearly label boxes on all sides in large letters, showing the room they will be placed in and a few items that are inside. On the top, list the contents. This helps you decide what to unpack first.

Keep one or two empty boxes out for the day you move and use them to pack any last minute or forgotten items.
