Top 7 Ways to Save Money on Food
by Nikki Willhite

Description: Seven ways to save money on buying food.

Sponsors:

Recently a writer of a major women's magazine contacted me. She wanted to interview me on ways to save money in the kitchen.

At first I balked at the idea of the interview. What more could I add? This subject has been hashed and re-hashed.

However, it started my mind turning. One thing I realized is that the rules have changed. For instance, in the past I might have listed cooking from scratch as one of the biggest money savers.

While that is true, I do not believe it is now practical. Most people just don't have the time.

Here are the top 7 ways, that in my opinion, save the most money on groceries and cooking. If you think I missed one that should be included, let me know, and I'll include it in the feedback section next week.

(1) Shop with a Price Book and stock up on sales - A price book is a portable list of items you normally purchase, and the average price you pay for them at your store/stores To give you an example - at one of our stores last week we found cans of vegetables for .28 cents, which is a major bargain in our area. We bought as many of them as we could store and use in our home.

(2) Grocery shop at a destination store - we save at least 1/3 off our bill shopping at a grocery store that has significantly lower prices.

(3) Don't waste food. Become skilled in the creative use of leftovers.

Develop a system for posting what you have in the refrigerator. One way is to use an erasable board. Mark the leftovers you put in your refrigerator - item, date, servings- intended use, such as lunches for all.

(4) Eat vegetarian twice a week- There are so many choices, such as Cheese Dishes (omelettes, mac & cheese); vegetarian pizza, or homemade bread (bread maker), salads and soups.

(5) Always cook extra and take advantage of your freezer - You can save lots of time by always browning double the amount of hamburger you need, and then freezing the rest for a quick meal on another day. Quick meals mean less temptation to pick up ready ]made food.

(6) Have a couple good crockpot recipes for busy days - when you know you are going to be too busy or too tired to cook. It not only helps your food budget, but can keep you sane on a busy day to know you have a warm meal waiting for you at home.

(7) Avoid recreational eating - Most Americans are very overweight. It is an eye opener to watch people go into Walmart, and then sit at the airport and look at the figures of the International travelers.
