The cottage style garden is favoured by people with
time to garden, who are a romantic at heart, or by
artists and photographers as a ready source of subject
matter who enjoy a densely planted informal mixed
garden filled interesting shapes, textures, fragrances
and colour from the wide variety of flowers, vegetables,
herbs, and fruit that grows in abundance.
The cottage style garden often includes some of the
following structural features:
A birdbath
Sundial
Wishing well or other water feature
Gazebo
A trellis or archway
Picket fences
Plants in terracotta pots or hanging baskets
Garden seating
Brick or cobblestone walkways
If this is the style of garden you envision, then you
have a wide variety of flowering and fragrant foliage
plants from which to choose.
Some of the more commonly grown ones are:
Roses – a favourite amongst cottage gardeners
Lavender – Along walkways, in containers or set amongst
other plants.
Old-Fashioned Flowers – Stock, Delphiniums, Violets,
Cosmos, Pansies, Love-in-the-mist, Poppies, Foxgloves
and more
Dahlias
Daisies
Geraniums
Hydrangeas
Bulbs – Daffodils, Tulips, Jonquils, Gladioli.
