Single Income Living
by Tequitia Andrews

Description: Want to be a stay at home mom? Here are some thoughts on single income living.

There are many men and women out here who would like to stay-at-home with their children. Unfortunately, society tells us that we cannot live happily on one income. I disagree with that. More simply put: "Don't believe the hype". You can live happily on one income, if you concentrate on your basic needs being met.

Those needs consist of food, clothing, and shelter. These are the things that we should be working to provide for our family. Not the big fancy car or flat-screened television. Now, I am not suggesting that you compromise your happiness in order to live on one income. There is nothing wrong with getting the nice car and house, if you can afford it. The problem is that most of us cannot afford it. We get these things and then work ourselves to death in order to pay for it. Live within your means.

Get your priorities in order. It isn't important that you have a big house. It is important that you have a house to live in. It isn't important that you have name brand clothing. It is important that you have clothing to wear. Get the point? We, as a society, are too caught up in things. Things do not make a happy home. It's the time spent and love grown in that home. Provide your family with the basic needs and spend quality time with them. It doesn't cost much to that.

The way I see it, living on one income doesn't mean depriving yourself of the finer things in life. It's like the story of the glass with water filled to the middle. One person saw the glass as being half-empty, while the other saw it as half full. Simply put: "It's all in how you look at it!" If you want to be a full-time parent, then do it. Don't allow society fool you into believing you cannot afford to.

Reader comment: Thank you! I have been a stay-at-home mom for 13 years now. My husband and I decided to have me do this from the time we married and forward. I am still amazed at the incredibly stupid comments that people feel free to make. I have been told by "well meaning people" that it is impossible to do this--boy is that wrong! I have also been told that I am putting undue pressure on my poor spouse. That is sad to hear, when did being a stay at home parent become an indication of laziness? I have 2 wonderful girls and love the time that I am able to spend with them. I am grateful for the opportunity and hope that others will continue to make similiar choices...Wendy
