Removing Odors from Microwaves

Description: Safe, natural tips for cleaning and removing odors from your microwave.

The problem is that this constant use for a variety of purposes creates odors that cause unpleasant smells in the microwave. For an appliance that is used as often as this one is, that's deadly! There are some fairly simple steps that will remove odors from a microwave, however.

First, remove the turntable, put it in the sink, and clean it thoroughly. Spills and splatters will cause odors, and you can't always see those spills on a frosted glass turntable. There may even be bacteria on the turntable that is not visible at all, but still causes odors.

Clean the inside of the microwave completely. It doesn't take long for a microwave to get very dirty. The best method is to teach each family member to clean the microwave each time they use it. If this doesn't work (don't worry, it usually doesn't), then set a time for yourself or make it an assignment once a week.

Food splatters regularly in the microwave, and each splatter that is left on the sides of the microwave is full of bacteria. Bacteria cause odors, and it doesn't take long for that to be evident.

Effectively cleaning the interior of the microwave is sometimes difficult because the splatters quickly become hard and firmly attached to the walls. To combat this problem, heat a bowl of water mixed with a small amount of vinegar in the microwave for 2 minutes.

Remove the mixture and allow it to cool. Pour some on a clean cloth, and then use the cloth to wipe the interior of the microwave. In most cases this method works within minutes to completely clean the microwave and leave it nearly odor-free. To complete the job and remove the vinegar odor, heat a cut lemon for one or two minutes. Burnt microwave popcorn presents special odor problems, but they can be eliminated using a similar methodology. Remove the burned popcorn and bag and put it in an outdoor trashcan. Open a door or windows to allow air to circulate. If it is not too cold, you could also use a fan to blow the air outside. Put a bowl of chopped lemon and cloves mixed with 4 cups of water in the microwave. Alternatively, you can use a bowl of 4 cups water, 1/4 c. vinegar, and a splash of lemon juice.

In either case, put the bowl in the microwave and allow it to boil for seven minutes. Then leave the microwave door closed and let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes. Open the door and remove the bowl of water. Used the cooled water on a cloth to wipe down the sides of the microwave. You may need to leave the microwave door open overnight to allow the smell to dissipate out of the microwave.
