Removing Vaseline from Hair

Description: Easily remove vaseline from hair with these tips from our readers.

Tip #1: When my son was a baby, I kept a nursery jar of vaseline on the window next to his bed (yes, I know, bad location!) One day just after Christmas I went in to get him up from his nap to find vaseline on the wall, the bed, the sheets, the curtains... and in his hair. I was able to get it off everything else, but it wouldn't come out of his hair. I tried everything-- from baby shampoo to dish washing detergent. Finally, I tried the bar of glycerine soap my husband had put in my Christmas stocking, and presto! One baby with very clean hair!...Suzi

Tip #2: My friend has a little girl who recently coated her hair with Vaseline and after repeated washings, it still looked greasy. I suggested using an egg. She beat an egg in a bowl, lathered it into her hair, rinsed it out, and shampooed as usual. Worked great!...Laura

Tip #3: My ten-year old came home from camp today with her head COVERED in Vaseline. We tried shampoo, Dawn dishwashing liquid, Go-Jo hand cleaner, corn starch - all to no avail. Remembering that peanut butter removed gum from her hair when she was small, I thought I would give it a try. It worked like a charm!...Carmen

Tip #4: I got my tip from Vaseline themselves....use a hair dryer to liquidify the vaseline, blot with paper towel, then wash hair with shampoo that does NOT have a conditioner in it and repeat if necessary...Rebecca

Tip #5: I recently got Vaseline in my hair after putting it on a burn and had a hard time getting it out. What got it out for me was simply a bar of soap. Don't use shampoo. Just scrub your hair with a bar or ordinary soap and rinse. I repeated about twice and it was all gone. This was a day after I got it in my hair...Josh

Tip #6: I was listening to Esther Williams a while ago, mentioning that her '50s and '40s hairstyles were kept together underwater with a mixture of vaseline and baby oil. Then I made the mistake of getting the stuff in my hair. Head & Shoulders shampoo is good stuff, and normally very effective - but it had no effect on the vaseline. Five days running, and it was still in there after repeated washings. Did keep the hair flat in a wind, though. I got it out with RC Cola. More than once. Just pour a little of it in your hair and rinse. Repeat if you need to. It's quick, painless, and uses stuff most of us have in the fridge. I haven't found any normal soap (lye might work?) that could take out vaseline like Coke does. Simple and effective. The police, I'm told, use RC, Pepsi, or Coke to clean away bloodstains at the scene of messy traffic accidents.

Tip #7: After trying 6 different shampoos, pepsi, and corn starch, I tried an almost forgotten sample of Burt's Bee's Mint Shampoo Bar as a last resort. It worked!!!...Tobi

Tip #8: We tried cornstarch, Dawn dish soap, clarifying shampoo, coke, and egg. And many of these several times. Vaseline gunk still there. I read a tip on line - only one person said it so I thought it not worthy. We caved and tried it; nothing to lose. WE slathered baby oil all over and washed it out with shampoo - GONE!!!!...Karen

Tip #9: I used Tip #8 and it worked wonderfully! I was horrified to discover that my daughter had put vaseline in another friend's hair, but was very relieved when I tried the baby oil trick and it worked!! I had to wash it a few times to get the baby oil completely out, but thanks for the tip!!...Tina

Tip #10: My niece recently had lice. After several unsuccessful chemical treaments we tried vaseline. It worked but then the vaseline was stuck in her hair. We tried all of the usual suggestions to no avail. We ended up using tide laundry soap followed up with a vinegar rinse. The Vaseline came out without any trouble. Tide washed out of her hair very easily...Jocelyne

Tip #11: I put vaseline in my kids hair after they got head lice. The only thing that I found to work was to put baby oil in the hair and then wash with Dawn dishwashing detergent. Worked great!!!!...Kim

Tip #12: Recently, my daughter had head lice. I tried Nix, but it burned her scalp. I looked online for other suggestions and decided to try vaseline treatment. First, let me recommend you NOT try this method. It worked, but it's messy and very difficult to get out. I tried cola, cornstarch, baking soda, dawn dish detergent even vinegar. Finally, I found an article that suggested baby oil. Eureka! The first time, it came completely out! Don't bother with the others, go straight for baby oil!...Jody

Tip #13: Put vaseline in my hair and could not get it out. Tried beating an egg in a bowl and rubbing in hair with shampoo. Rinsed out shampoo and rinsed out egg and bingo it's gone...Frances

Tip #14: I thought I was helping my baby's cradle cap when the baby oil didn't work and put vaseline in her hair. I NEVER thought I wouldn't be able to get it out until I washed it and it continued to stick up like alfalfa. I found this page and tried the BABY OIL then shampooed! Voila! No more vaseline!...Kelly

Tip #15: The ONLY thing that got vaseline out of my daughter's hair was baby oil. It worked!!!!...Kerri

Tip #16: BABY POWDER, BABY POWDER, BABY POWDER!!! After my daughter had head lice, and we tried Nix, which did not work, we decided to try the vaseline and shower cap method. However, the vaseline was a nightmare to get out! I tried Dawn, Tide, baby oil, even peanut butter, and nothing. Then I saw a tip on here for baby powder, which I wasn't going to try, cause only one person suggested it. So glad I did, it was the only thing that worked, and after only one wash! I couldn't believe it!...Laura

Tip #17: THE BABY OIL WORKS! I used everything, baking soda, corn starch, baby powder, (all three repeatedly!!!) clarifying shampoo, rubbing alcohol. I finally came to realize that I was just going to be stuck with this greasy stubborn hair for weeks! Baby oil was the last thing that I EVER thought would work, I went three days knowing that baby oil was an option but thought that the little progress that I had made to remove the greasy vaseline would just make it worse and I would have to start all over again...At midnight on a Sunday night I thought, I can't go all week looking like this (I have fairly long hair as well, middle of my back) so I decided to go with the dreadful baby oil suggestion from this website. I feel angry and relieved at the same time! Angry that I hadn't tried this sooner, but so HAPPY that it took it out! You may have to wash the baby oil out a couple of times in the shower but over this weekend I have serioulsy washed my hair 25 times trying different things and had I only tried this first I wouldn't have had to seclude myself in the house ALL weekend! The reason I had vaseline in my hair in the first place is that my 5 year old came home from school with lice/nits go figure, and I couldn't bear the thought of putting mayo in my hair overnight like the doctor had said. Oh well you live and learn. Moral of the story, BABY OIL WORKS!! Thanks for the tip!...Amanda

Tip #18: Hand Sanitizer or rubbing alcohol worked for us, then wash the sanitizer out with dish soap. It worked like a charm...Deb

Tip #19: I put vaseline in my kids hair after they got head lice. The only thing that I found to work was to put baby oil in the hair and then wash with Dawn dishwashing detergent. Worked great!!!!...Kim
