How to Make Swiffer Replacements

Swiffer's items are expensive. Instead of having to refill your Swiffer, or even buy replacement pads, you can make your own.

How to Make Swiffer Pads

  • You can use 20 squares of felt to make replacement Swiffer pads. They fit perfectly, and can be washed in a normal load and reused.
  • Old towels also make great Swiffer substitutes.
  • Pieces of an old flannel shirt are good replacements too. Here is a pattern for making your own washable Swiffer pads.

How to Replace Swiffer Cleaning Solution

  • Take the canister off your Swiffer mop and remove the cap with pliers, if necessary. It is on there tight. Refill the canister with DIY all-purpose cleaner. I didn't have any problem getting the cap off. Try running it under hot water for a few minutes first. My husband was able to twist it off with his hands.
  • If you can't get the cap off, you can also drill a hole in the top of an empty bottle, and using a small funnel you can refill it with your cleaner of choice. Then cover the hole with duct tape. That way you don't have to worry about messing with the cap.

I don't know about you, but I am always looking for ways to save money on cleaning supplies. I love the convenience of the Swiffer mop, but just can't justify paying .50 each for disposable cleaning pads! The cleaning solution is expensive too. I have found that the homemade cleaner works just as well as the Swiffer brand, and has less of a chemical smell and more of a fresh scent.
