How to Clean Your Toaster

When we clean our kitchens, we usually prioritize those bulkier kitchen appliances such as the dishwasher, the fridge, etc., and we tend to forget those smaller appliances which are usually abused because daily use. The toaster, a less bulky kitchen appliance keeps our bread hot and ready for breakfast everyday and it certainly deserves a part of our kitchen cleaning regimen.
Cleaning your toaster does not only render it sparklingly neat but it also maintains its maximum potential. It also prevents fire hazards that are usually caused by unkempt wiring.
1. The first step in cleaning your toaster is to unplug it (You don't want to get electrocuted when cleaning, right?). Next is to place your toaster wherever you are comfortable and preferably on a place where you can have enough room to move about. Be sure to lay down sheets of newspaper so that you do not have to worry about cleaning up your workplace afterwards. All the crumbs and dirt and dust that you will be collecting later on will not be much of a problem if you have these sheets of newspaper. It will be okay to move it somewhere near a trash can or bin.
2. Start cleaning the insides of your toaster first. Be sure that your toaster is in room temperature. If you have the door type oven, you must scrub the interior using large salt rocks and a sponge. This will loosen up carbon particles (dark, burnt residual particles from your toasted bread) and will eventually dislodge and get rid of them. If you have the other type of toaster, which is door-less, you have to put these rock salts inside the toaster and gently shake it. The same mechanism of loosening the dirt will happen. Why do we need to remove carbon particles? Removing carbon particles in our toasters is important because these could be the source of the staining of your toasters which in turn will make it look nasty. Just be sure that you empty all of the rock salt out as this can be the source of a bigger problem which is rust stains.
3. Empty the crumb tray over the sheet of newspaper or on to your garbage bin. Wash the tray with warm water and a gentle liquid detergent or your favorite natural cleaning product. If your toaster does not come with a crumb tray just shake off the residual crumbs over the newspaper.
4. Now that you are done with the interior, you may now proceed with cleaning the exterior of the toaster. You can clean it simply by wiping it with a damp sponge or cloth soaked in vinegar or with the use of your favorite home cleaning product. If you detect that there are toughly adhered stains, you may want to scrub this surface gently (you do not want your toaster to develop scratches) with a bit of baking soda using a sponge or cloth.
You have to remember that things perform better when they are maintained properly. Similarly, your toaster needs the same amount of cleaning that you give to your other kitchen appliances. If you do not have the time to clean your toaster (especially its interior), then at least regularly wipe your toaster to ensure maximum performance.
