Green and Clean: An Easy Home Recipe for an Environmentally Friendly Toilet Cleaner

Keeping our toilet bowls fresh and clean doesn't always come cheap. Store-bought toilet cleaners often come with a hefty price tag. However, our wallets aren’t the only ones feeling the expense of retail cleaners. Our health and the environment also suffer as a result of the toxic chemicals found in many retail toilet cleaners.

From chlorine and ammonia to hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde, many toilet cleaners contain harmful ingredients that create toxins in the air and on the surfaces of our bathroom in addition to causing detrimental effects on the plants, animals and bacteria in our environment. While creating harmful gases in our home and exposing us to carcinogens, these chemicals also cause problems for other organisms in our environment. The chemicals make their way into the soil and water systems and harm animals, plants, bacteria and aquatic life. From skin irritation and respiratory problems to mutations and organ damage, these chemicals damage our environment and the life that lives in it.

Thankfully, there are simple pantry items that we can combine to create homemade toilet clears that sanitize, deodorize and disinfect our toilet bowls without harming us or our environment. These homemade cleaners utilize household products and are just as effective as store cleaners. What’s more, they are nearly half the cost and come with double the environmental benefits.

Try following these simple steps to create a homemade toilet cleaner for your home’s bathroom:

Ingredients:

Baking soda
White vinegar
Borax

Baking soda is great for cleaning and also deodorizing. Its texture makes it ideal for scouring as well.
White vinegar helps freshen your toilet boil and cut through any grease or grit.
Borax shares the same cleaning and deodorizing effects as baking soda, but it also disinfects. You can pick it up in the laundry section of a grocery store.

Recipe:

1. Pour 1/4 cup of baking soda into toilet bowl and drizzle with white vinegar.

2. Let the ingredients sit for ½ hour. Scrub the toilet bowl and flush.

3. If your toilet bowl has any stains, apply some borax to the bowl and then scrub and flush.
