Preparing Spinach for Freezing
Wash and trim spinach. You can freeze spinach leaves whole, or you can chop them first before freezing.
Methods for Freezing Spinach
- Raw Spinach - Place raw spinach in a colander and let water completely drain from rinsed spinach. Transfer drained spinach to ziploc freezer bags or freezer containers. Spinach leaves hold their shape and texture better when steamed or blanched first (after thawed), but this method works well if you are going to use the thawed spinach in a soup, omelet, or casserole.
- Steaming Spinach - Steam washed spinach for 1 minute. Cool completely then drain in colander. Blot cooled spinach with paper towels and place in ziploc freezer bags or freezer containers.
- Blanching Spinach - Place washed spinach in boiling water for 30 seconds. Dip immediately in a bowl of ice water. Cool completely then drain in colander. Blot cooled spinach with paper towels and place in ziploc freezer bags or freezer containers.
Note: If using freezer bags, remove as much air as possible from bags before freezing.
Storage Time
Frozen spinach can be stored for up to 1 year with no noticeable loss in quality.
