Spice up Your Holidays with Walnuts

(NC)-It's hard to avoid snacking during the holidays, so be sure to choose snack alternatives with a nutritional punch, like walnuts. Walnuts provide protein, essential fats, dietary fibre, folate and magnesium and when part of a heart healthy diet, they may reduce the risk of heart disease. While walnuts are packed with nutrients, they also provide appetite satisfaction and taste good too. Choose California walnuts for excellent quality and taste.

For your holiday snack table why not spice up your walnuts? In large bowl, whisk 1 egg white and 1 tbsp (15 mL) water until foamy; add 4 cups (1 L) California Walnut halves and mix until all nuts are coated; drain excess liquid. In a small bowl, combine 1/3 cup (75 mL) sugar, 2 tsp (10 mL) coarse salt, 1 1/2 tsp (7 mL) cumin, 1/2 tsp (2 mL) cayenne pepper and 1/4 tsp (1 mL) garlic powder. Stir in sugar mixture until walnuts are evenly coated. Spread on non-stick baking sheet. Bake in 325°F (160°C) oven for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring twice, until nuts are lightly browned. Allow to cool on baking sheet. (Nuts will become dry and crispy as they cool.) Store in air-tight container. Makes about 4 cups (1 L).
