Christmas Napkins
by Mel, the Gift Girl

Make these cloth Christmas napkins for quick holiday decorations, hostess gifts, gift basket liners or to wrap up some baked goods for coworkers or neighbors.

The simplest and easiest way to make Christmas napkins is to buy some holiday fabric when it is on sale. Wash, dry and iron the fabric, then cut out 15-18 inch squares. Press the edges to form a hem (I don't usually press my hems, but it makes a nice straight napkin) and sew all the way around. Your napkins are done!

If you'd like to get a little more creative, you can pull out some stencils or rubber stamps and fabric paint. Use muslin, solid colored cotton or even a plain sheet you no longer use. Practice stamping or stenciling on a scrap of fabric to get used to the absorbency of the fabric. Then do a simple design on the corners of the napkins. Ideas for designs: holiday symbols like a Christmas tree, candle, wreath, ornament, star; holiday words like joy, thanks, peace; family crest, initials or names.

If you have an ink jet or laser printer, you can do some really fun iron-on napkins. (Find iron-on transfer paper at an office supply store or craft store.) Use your computer to design your iron-on, then follow the manufactures directions for transferring the design to the napkins. Here are some themes to get you creativity started:

  • lyrics to holiday songs
  • puns, jokes or limericks
  • manners
