Paper can be recycled in many different useful ways, and one of the ways in which it can be recycled involves really cool craft projects. With the addition of flour and water, ordinary paper can be blended and used to make amazing works of art. The finished works of art can be painted, or you can use colored construction paper to make paper clay in vibrant colors that require no additional decorating or painting. If you want to try something different, give the following ideas a try, and turn paper and a couple of ordinary ingredients into clay that can be transformed into beautiful works of art. Adults as well as kids love working with this clay, and the options for crafting with this unique clay material are absolutely endless!
Necessary Supplies
To make clay suitable for air-dry craft projects you will need two cups of newspaper or construction paper scraps, four and one-half cups of tap water, and one-half cup of all-purpose flour. You will also need a blender, a wire colander, and two large mixing bowls.
Procedure
Begin by ripping the paper of your choice into small pieces, and place it in a blender along with four cups of tap water. Set aside the extra half cup. Blend the mixture until it turns into a liquid mass. Pour it into a wire colander, and allow the water to drain away for several minutes. Next, squeeze out any excess moisture, and set it aside.
To make the paper clay, mix the all-purpose flour and the reserved half cup of water until well blended, and gradually add the paper pulp to the water and flour combination. Knead the mixture into dough, and use it to make anything you want. Finished clay creations can be dried, and it takes anywhere from one to five days, depending on the thickness of the finished project.
Crafty Ideas
Consider adding several drops of food coloring to clay made with newsprint. Keep in mind that newsprint will give finished projects a grayish appearance. Alternately, dried finished creations can be painted with watercolors or latex craft paint. No one will ever guess the ingredients used to make this unique clay.
If you want to make really different, knead iridescent glitter into the paper clay. You can create beautiful flowers, eye-catching refrigerator magnets, glittery rainbows, and anything else you can dream up. Use your sense of imagination and creativity to make paper clay works of art that will definitely impress. The options for making items with paper clay are virtually limitless!
