Impatiens are the most popular flowering plant that is planted in beds and are an excellent choice for a shade garden. They are an attractive shade annual, easy to grow and will flower through the entire season.
These flowering plants come in a variety of colors like mauve, red, rose, pink and white to name a few. They also have varieties that have different patterns and bi-colors.
Impatiens like shade or partial shade to grow healthy. They grow anywhere between six inches to twenty four inches tall, depending on the moisture and the amounts of nutrients you have in your soil. A good healthy, nutrient rich soil structure that retains moisture well is what these plants like.
There are a couple of ways you can plant these flowering plants. If you want the plants to grow tall you need to plant them close together, about six inches apart and if you want them to spread out to be used as a ground cover they need to be planted about twelve inches apart.
When preparing the area for planting you should mix a good amount of compost into the soil. This will improve the soil structure and add the nutrients to the soil that these plants need to feed from. Once you have finished your planting water them deeply once a week through the entire season with a good nutrient rich compost tea.
Impatiens are also an excellent choice for planting in containers and window boxes. If you choose to plant them with one of these methods keep them out of full and direct sunlight. Full or direct sunlight will stun there growth. Also with this method of planting care needs to be taken to check the moisture content of the soil on a daily bases, don't let the soil dry out.
