Choosing Activities for Your Child's Birthday Party
by Ashley Boucher

Have a birthday boy or girl and need to figure out how to keep the kids entertained? Whatever your child's age, choosing appropriate and fun activities for your child's birthday party is important to make it a memorable one.

A first birthday may not require many activities beyond baby's first cake and ice cream, but after making it through that all important birthday, it's time to entertain the birthday boy or girl and all of their similarly aged guests. Two-year-olds have notoriously short attention spans and are not experts at following structured activities, so setting up the toddlers with some noise makers or engaging them in a slightly chaotic game of musical chairs are some perfect ways to keep the little ones happy.

Even if you're entertaining a room full of three-year-olds, you can liven up the party with a pinata. The little ones might be too young to smash one open in the traditional manner, but many pinatas now come with pull strings on the side so younger kids can access the goodies without too much effort. By about age five, your child should be ready to take a good whack at a pinata and send candy flying. Keep pinatas as part of the party until your child becomes a teen; they're popular, fun, and easy to purchase and set up.

Other activities depend on the space you have. If you're holding the party somewhere with a large lawn or other outdoor space, think about a moon bounce or pony rides. Be prepared, however; both of these activities can make kids with weak stomachs have a messy accident, so make sure you've got a plan for "evacuation" and clean-up. Even if there are some unavoidable accidents, your child is sure to be the most popular kid on the playground with a moon bounce or pony rides at their birthday party.

Thinking about the traditional birthday clown? Make sure that none of the little guests are afraid before hiring Bozo. The last thing you want is tears, which seem to spread like wildfire in a birthday party setting.

Don't forget party favors. These can easily be cheap, plastic trinkets that only cost a few dollars to put together bags of favors for the whole group; smaller children will be thrilled to receive any kind of party favor, regardless of quality. Just be sure to cater the favors to the age group, making sure not to buy toys with small parts for children under three. Likewise, you don't want to buy "baby" toys for older kids.
