If you are looking for the perfect Christmas or birthday gift for a boy ages 4 to 7, here are some ideas to get you started. With twin five-year-old boys, and a little brother following in their footsteps, our family has tried out a lot of what the current toy market has to offer in the past couple of years. Now you can learn from our trial and errors!
First of all, it is very important to really pay attention to ages stated on toys that you buy, especially if the gift is for someone else's child. With Legos, for instance, there are many different Lego products currently on the market. You may not notice at first glance, however, that each product has a different age range recommendation on it. Some of these Lego sets are very complicated, and recommended only for older children, up to 12 years of age. Make sure if you are buying for a younger boy, that you are buying something for his age. This is also true for some of the Transformers products.
Legos
Legos are a big hit for boys of all ages. They are not recommended for children under four years of age, however, because of the small pieces. There are special Lego type products for younger children. There are Lego sets to capture any boy's imagination, from Toy Story to Indiana Jones, to Star Wars.
Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs
Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs are old favorites that have never gone out of style. There are a number of Lincoln Log sets, such as the Frontier Junction, Wild West Frontier, and Shady Pine Homestead, that allow a child to build an entire Lincoln Log town. My boys have spents hours and hours playing with both their Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs.
Superhero Action Figures
What young boy doesn't like superheroes? My boys are completely obsessed with superheroes. There are so many to choose from, such as the DC Comics and Marvel Comics superheroes. My boys have quite an extensive collection of superhero action figures, and they were worth every penny we have spent on them. Except for the couple our dog got a hold of, they have played with them for hours on end. You can also get play sets to go with the action figures. Fisher Price Imaginext has a Batcave that we got for our boys for Christmas last year. It is very sturdy and has withstood many superhero battles during the past year. There is now a Joker's Fun House they really want for Christmas this year.
Star Wars
If the young boy you are shopping for likes Star Wars (what boy doesn't), then light sabers are a great gift idea. Many of them light up and make sounds when they are activated. These are great fun for boys to play with.
Leapster Handheld Game System
Another item that has definitely been worth the price we paid for it is the Leapster handheld game system. They have been playing with these for two years now and love them. They are great for playing in bed, or in the car, or taking on vacations. There are many games available for the Leapster, and they are coming out with new games all the time. The most recent one is the Toy Story 3 game. Some of the games are for older children, but there are many for ages 4 to 6.
Hopefully this will give you some good gift ideas for that special young boy in your life, whether your own son, or grandson or nephew. Boys this age really aren't hard to please. Most love doing things with their hands, and anything that requires them to use their imagination can only be good!
