DIY Halloween Costumes
by Maggie Voelker

Loading the kids in the minivan and heading to the Halloween superstore might be technically “easier,” but is saving an hour or so really worth the exorbitant prices and missed bonding time? I’d like to argue that it doesn’t, so if you’re looking to avoid the Halloween superstores this year, get creative with your costuming.

The team at Socks4Life.com created a new resource to highlight creative uses for socks—including a guide to DIY Costume Ideas. The guide has all sorts of ideas—from traditional costumes for one to funny costume ideas for a group! Each outfit can be created by recycling and repurposing stuff that’s already lying around the house or that can be purchased from a secondhand store—no need to take out a second mortgage financing the holiday.

DIY Halloween costumes are not only wallet-friendly, but they’re also a chance for kids to use their imaginations. Children will love deciding who or what they’ll be for Halloween and how to create the costume. Parents, load everyone into the van and head to the secondhand store. Give each child a spending limit and then let them loose; this will encourage independence and creativity. Bonus: Each child will feel personally responsible for their costume and so much more satisfied when it’s complete…hello peace and quiet!

Read on for a few ideas from the DIY Costume Ideas guide:

Mario and Luigi:

  • Mario: Red long-sleeved shirt and overalls. Wear a red painter’s hat and attach to the center of the hat, a white felt circle with an “M” cut out of it. Finish the outfit off with white gloves and a mustache.
  • Luigi: Duplicate Mario’s costume, but swap the red out for green (green long-sleeved shirt and green hat with an “L” rather than “M”).

Lady Bug/Bumble Bee:

  • Red or yellow long sleeve shirt
  • Black spandex pants or tights
  • Create wings using cardboard: Draw a large circle on red or yellow (depending on your bug of choice) poster board. Color large black dots or use tape to create black stripes (again, depending on your bug). Draw a thick line down the center of the circle and cut down the center of the line to create two wings. Attach to the back of shirt or create shoulder straps.
  • Antennae: Create using a black headband and pipe cleaners.

Stewardess:

  • Dark pencil skirt and matching suit jacket
  • White blouse or button-up shirt
  • Wear a neck scarf
  • Low heels
  • Wear your hair in a bun and act super perky. Direct people to a seat, the exit, or just the kitchen for a drink.

QuailMan:

  • White crew neck t-shirt
  • Green sweater vest
  • Use red tape to write a large “Q” on the front of the sweater
  • Khaki shorts
  • Wear a pair of white underwear (whitey-tighty kind) over the khaki shorts.
  • Belt: Tie around your forehead, use wire to make the end of the belt stand up.
  • Red cape: Use fabric or a towel for this.
  • Tennis shoes and white tube socks.

Wild Sports Fan:

  • Jersey
  • Shorts
  • Striped knee high socks to match jersey
  • Paint your face with your team’s colors.
  • Carry around a foam finger, pom poms, and any other fan-gear you have.
