With the holiday season once more looming large, it is not surprising
that children are getting in the spirit of things. Undoubtedly you will
soon be inundated with requests for baking cookies, reading stories,
telling that special Santa Claus story just one more time, and also
making wonderful crafts. Of course, if your preschooler is already familiar
with the arts and crafts that are a part of your repertoire, she or he
might be clamoring for something different. Even as you might try to
once again interest her in the easy to fabricate Santa hanger, you know
that it is time to expand a bit. Read on to learn how to make wonderful
Christmas elf ornaments that are just as easy, if not easier, than the
tried and true Santa and reindeer
ones you have made in the past.
Begin by gathering all the supplies you need:
- You’ll need felt in the traditional holiday colors. To make things
more interesting, consider also using a couple of non-traditional
colors, such as pink, purple and yellow.
- Glue comes next. Hot glue sticks best to felt, but if you do not
believe that you will be able to safely work with the hot glue around
your child, opt for the tried and true white school glue.
- Last but not least are the decorations. You will need eyes, and
while you can make them out of felt, they are funnier if you use the
wiggle eyes you can buy at the craft store. Look around for pompoms,
sequins, little bells, plastic flowers, scraps of wool, small cotton balls and
so on.
The craft itself begins with your tracing the child’s hand on a piece
of green felt. Do not trace the thumb, but only the fingers which should
also be spread slightly. If you want to make a lot of ornaments as
gifts for friends and family, trace your child’s hand on a piece of stiff
cardstock and then cut it out. The odds of your child holding still for
20 minutes while you trace her or his hand a number of times are slim!
Once the handprints are all traced on the green felt, it is time to
cut them out. This is a job best done by the adult!
After the green felt is successfully cut out, turn the hand over so
that the palm is up and the fingers point downward. Now is the time to cut
out a face for the elf. Pick one of the pieces of felt that has
non-traditional Christmas colors. The oval then needs to be adorned with two
wiggly eyes (or more, if your child desires) and a happy mouth. You may
cut out the mouth from a piece of felt, use a bit of wool, a sequin,
or just draw it on with a marker. Next, glue the oval to the palm of the
hand.
The next step involves the hat. After all, a
Christmas elf
ornament needs proper head covering! Use the red felt to cut out a
triangle. This shape will then need to be glued to the wrist portion of
the hand cutout. After the glue has dried, gently fold over the tip of
the hat and add a pompom, cotton ball or bell. Last but not least, you
will be able to decorate the finger tips. Glue on sequins, pompoms,
bells, or anything else you like. You may mix and match and permit your
child’s creativity to run wild!
