Festive Fourth of July Treats
by Kelly Wilson

The July 4 holiday provides many fun opportunities to get together with loved ones. No matter what you’re doing to celebrate, these treats will add a festive touch to your table!

American Flag Fruit-Kabobs

For a fun and festive fruit snack, set out a rectangular tray of fruit-kabobs made from strawberries, banana slices and blueberries. Using wood skewers, start from the left of the flag to the right, piling on strawberries and banana slices for the red and white of the flag, then using blueberries along the top half of the skewer for the blue section. Once halfway through the flag and the blue section is finished, eliminate the blueberries from the remaining skewers, and use banana slices and strawberries to complete your fruit-kabob flag.

A Patriotic Trifle

Trifles are easy to put together and add a festive touch to your July 4th celebration. Using red, white and blue ingredients, layer each colorful food separately in a trifle bowl in honor of our country. For example, use angel food or vanilla cake, different flavors of yogurt or custard, and fruit like raspberries and blueberries for a delicious dessert. For a savory dish, layer blue cheese crumbles or dressing, sundried or fresh halved cherry tomatoes, and chunks of dense sourdough bread.  Tailor your trifle to your specific preferences in the red, white and blue theme for your July 4th celebration.

Red, White and Blue Salsa and Chips

Salsa doesn’t only come in jars, it can be made right in your own kitchen. Don’t like onions? Don’t include them. Prefer more cilantro? The recipe is up to you. Use fresh ingredients to make your own special salsa recipe, like tomatoes, lime juice, cilantro, jalapeno, garlic, onion, and salt and pepper. Experiment with different combinations of sweet and savory, creating a mango or pineapple salsa with a kick. Surround your bowl of salsa with a mix of white and blue tortilla chips to complete this special snack.

Frozen July 4th Fruit Pops

These delicious frozen treats put a new spin on enjoying fruit during a warm summer afternoon. Puree strawberries, adding ice and yogurt if desired. Pour the mixture into empty yogurt cups or ramekins, and place a spoon or popsicle stick in the center of each, standing straight up. Freeze for about 24 hours. Place each container under warm water for a few seconds to loosen, then remove for a delicious, healthy treat! For a blue option, use blueberries with blueberry yogurt, and for white use vanilla yogurt.

A Trail Mix to Celebrate the USA

If you have a family of snack-lovers, this trail mix will help fill them up while they play during your celebration. Combine yogurt covered pretzels or raisins with blue M&Ms or dried blueberries and dried cherries. Set out bowls of your special trail mix throughout the day to add a festive touch to your July 4th celebration!
