With the holidays coming up quickly, there are many things to prepare and purchase. This can quickly add up and get quite expensive, even if you do try and stay within budget. One great way to save some money and give something from the heart is your own handmade holiday cards.
Not only will you get a chance to get creative and even recycle some things from around the home, but you will get a chance to step away from the holiday rush and relax in the comfort of your own home while making these cards.
Rather than make quick cards that obviously look handmade, why not make something more professional looking? That way, you can blow your loved ones away when they find out you made them yourself!
Here are some great tips for DIY holiday decorating:
Recycle Paper or Fabric
Look for any scrap paper or fabric that may be sitting around the home. They are excellent for decorating cards and any shape, size, colour or patter can work beautifully without looking like recycled materials.
Some great sources or fabric:
- Newspapers and magazines
- Ads and junk mail
- Empty boxes or product packaging
- Old shirts, towels, blankets, tablecloths
While it may seem that these materials will look like scrap materials on the card, the key to making them look more professional is to use them as smaller accenting details on the card, rather than the main focus.
Make little bows, frame words or images, small silhouettes or simply cut out little stars, polka-dots and other decorative details that add an extra touch to a card.
Simple Shapes
If you have some scrap pieces of wrapping paper or other pretty decorative paper, you can easily make lovely holiday cards by cutting out simple shapes and layering them on contrasting or complimentary paper or tissue. This card making method is very quick and simplistic with a final result of a beautiful contemporary card design that anyone can love.
Use Photography
If you are not confident with your crafting skills or simply don’t have the time for cutting out shapes for decorating cards, why not just use your own photography? Take some existing photography that you don’t mind giving away or quickly print out some smaller versions of your favorite photos are the focal point of the card. To add an extra decorative detail, layer it on top of colourful paper or tissue as a pretty frame and you’re done!
Have fun with card making and try whenever you can to add a personal touch for each person. Decorate according to their favorite colours, images or style. Doing this will immediately let the receiver know how important they are to you since it will clearly show just how much thought and effort went into something as simple as a card.
