It’s not all about ghouls and ghostly goings on at Halloween. The world of Halloween costumes for children is only governed by the limits of your imagination. You also don’t have to bust your budget by spending hundreds of dollars at the store when you’re planning your Halloween costume ideas. Homemade Halloween costumes are loads of fun and can be used as a fantastic family craft activity.

But Mommy, I Want to Be...
The most important aspect of making a Halloween costume for your child is to get their input. You might want to see your little treasure dressed as a Princess, but your six-year old may want to go ‘Trick or Treating’ dressed as a plate of ‘Spaghetti and Meatballs’! Unless your child has a costume idea that is unsafe or unworkable, you should try as much as possible to understand what they want. Nothing spells ‘uncool’ for kids than having to get all dressed up in mom’s idea of what looks good on Halloween.
Traditional Halloween Costumes for Kids that are a Guaranteed Winner

For the head of the monster, you’ll need an empty gallon-sized plastic jug with the handle and neck cut off. Paint it green and use silver pipe cleaners threaded through the jug to create stitches. Using a couple of bolts attached to the side of the jug, you have immediately created a fantastic Frankenstein’s Monster headpiece. Use fake fur for the hair, fray the end of a pair of used jeans, slap on dad’s old blazer, and don a pair of rubber gloves. A touch of face paint and Frankenstein’s monster is ready to terrorize the neighbourhood. You don’t have to spend a lot of money creating a costume worthy of a night out in your neighbourhood. If you look through the stores, you can use cheap Halloween decorations as a part of your costume. From spiders and snakes to webs and wizards, all you need is a little creativity, and a lot of imagination.
Character Costumes at no Cost

Children love dressing up as their favourite cartoon character and depending on the hit-movie of the moment; many children choose popular characters for their Halloween costume. If you have a little Rapunzel, just waiting to take to the streets you can make a perfect Halloween costume without having to break out your sewing machine.
The most important part of a Rapunzel costume is, of course, her luscious locks. To make this ‘Tangled’ tots headdress all you need to do is take two lengths of yarn or wool and drape it gently over your child’s head. Tie it with a ribbon at the nape of the neck and then plait the lengths together. Add a pointed hat with some chiffon, a pretty floor length princess dress and some ballet slippers and your precious treasure is transformed into a fantasy princess.
The best aspect of choosing homemade Halloween costumes is that your child is able to help with the creative process. It’s fun for everyone and kids have awesome ideas on how to decorate their scary masks and costumes.
