Pysanka Ukrainian Easter Egg

The egg had traditionally been used as symbolic of the start of a new life, quite like a new life emerging from an egg as the chick hatches out. Even to this day, Easter eggs are popularly used as symbols of new life in countries like Romania, Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, and other countries of Central Europe.

There are many traditions of giving decorated eggs as a token of love, friendship and good wishes. Different techniques are employed for decorating eggs, which could be natural or made from materials like wood and plastics. However, the most renowned decorated eggs come from Ukraine and are known as Ukrainian pysanka or Ukrainian Easter eggs. Similar eggs coming from Poland are known as Polish pisanka.

Though many techniques are used for making this kind of eggs, and many help books are available for making these, nothing surpasses the beauty of Ukrainian pysanka that derives it name from Ukrainian verb “pysaty,” meaning “to write.” “Pysanky” is its plural form.

Since generations, Ukrainians are known to have been decorating eggs, creating these little jewels. The process of decorating involves many rituals and the designs date back to pre-Christian era. The designs contain symbolic representation of many gods and natural elements like the sun, fire, earth and air. One finds a large variety of decorations in Ukrainian traditions, which vary all over Ukraine.

Ukrainian Easter Eggs have very exquisite designs, intricate details and brilliant color combinations which are very meticulously created by talented artists, using a wax-and-dye technique similar to batik.

Pysanky are aptly called a miracle of Ukraine. They feature the everlasting magic of colors and artistic ideas that rivet the attention of the onlooker. The hand painted real hollow egg illuminates your home with natural light, kindness and happiness. Hand-painted Ukrainian eggs are known for bringing happiness, light and warmth to your home, decorating and protecting them from all evils!

Pysanky make a great display during Easter or Christmas celebrations that will simply amaze your family and friends.
