If you're like many families, chances are you may be planning a special family dinner to celebrate Valentine's Day this year. Although Valentine's Day dinners are a great idea, this year why not take the opportunity to commemorate the holiday at the breakfast table as well? By following these quick, easy and inexpensive planning tips, you'll be able to create a Valentine's Day-themed breakfast that your family will not soon forget.
Start with a Beautiful Table
Before you start to plan your Valentine's Day breakfast menu, take the time to set the table for the event. After all, your special breakfast treats will look even more festive when they are served on a specially decorated table. Start by covering the table with a red, pink or white tablecloth. If you have small children, you could also simply cover the table with a plain white paper tablecloth or strips of white wrapping paper. Give your children a box of crayons and let them do your tablecloth decorating for you. You can also cut large hearts out of red or pink construction paper or scrapbook paper in order to create fun placemats for each family member. Plain white dishes will look great when contrasted against the red or pink hearts. Of course, you could also use specially printed Valentine's Day paper or foam plates if desired. A red, white, pink or heart-printed napkin folded at the side of each place setting will complete the look. A bouquet of red, white and pink carnations can add the perfect finishing touch to your Valentine's Day breakfast table.
Festive Breakfast Treats
Once you've set a beautiful table, it's time to turn your attention to the breakfast menu. Pancakes poured in the shape of hearts can be an especially fun breakfast treat. Or, use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut hearts out of bread slices. Use these heart-shaped pieces of bread to create a fun French toast treat. After arranging your French toast pieces on the plates, sift some powdered sugar through a paper doily to add a pretty lacy look. For extra visual and taste appeal, top the French toast with fresh strawberry slices.
Of course, you can also give a fun Valentine's Day twist to even the simplest of breakfast foods, such as a bowl of cold cereal or hot oatmeal. For example, you could paint a pretty red heart in a bowl of oatmeal using strawberry jam. A bowl of cold cereal would look especially festive with sliced strawberries arranged in a heart shape. If your family enjoys eggs for breakfast, butter a slice of bread on both sides for each family member. Cut a heart-shaped opening out of the center of each slice using a cookie cutter. Put the bread slices in a hot skillet. Break an egg into each heart-shaped opening. Cook on one side then carefully flip each bread piece to cook the other side. The end result will be a pretty, delicious, nutritious and fun way to start your family's Valentine's Day together this year.
