Valentine's Day Heart Necklace for Kids
This fun heart necklace is a great Valentine's Day project for kids to make. You probably already have everything you need on hand to make it.
To make this Valentine's Day necklace you will need:
- Red and pink construction paper or scrapbook paper
- Drinking straws
- Hole punch
This necklace is really easy for preschoolers to make. They can practice their lacing and cutting skills. You can tailor the craft according to their skill level.
First you will need a heart shape to use as a template. If you search Google Images for "heart shape" you will find many different hearts you can print out and use for a template.
For each necklace you will need approximately six red hearts and six pink hearts. If your children are old enough, you can set them to work tracing and cutting out the hearts. If your child is younger you may have to do the cutting for them.
Next use a hold punch to punch a hole in the center of each heart.
Cut three drinking straws into approximately 1-inch pieces. Your child can help with cutting the straws if you hold the straw and they cut.
Cut a piece of yarn approximately 24 inches long. Have your child alternately string the straws, red hearts, and pink hearts on the piece of yarn. After the necklace is finished, tie the ends of the yarn together and the necklace is finished and ready to wear.
There are many opportunities to teach your child during this activity. You can talk to them about colors. Ask them to pick up a red heart or pink heart to place on the string. For older preschoolers you can talk about patterns and ask them what comes next on the necklace, a red heart or a pink heart?
This is a fun activity to do with your kids. You might think it's just for girls but preschool aged boys love this activity too, I know mine did. I was very surprised that my three-year-old son was able to tell me what was next in the pattern. A great teaching moment.
