Autumn Decorating Ideas

When it comes to decorating for autumn, it’s really all about looking out at the world that is changing around you, and taking your cues from the delightful variety of colors and scents that are popping up everywhere. In this way you can bring a little of the natural beauty of the season into your home.

One of the most noticeable characteristics of the fall seasonal change is the wide variety of colors which can be found in the brightly hued foliage. Deep earth tones of red, amber, brown, and orange all bring to mind the autumnal season, and can help to create the illusion of seasons changing right in your own home. You don’t necessarily have to paint the walls to achieve this effect, slipcovers, pillow cases, throw rugs, and decorative wall pieces are all easy ways to match your décor to the world outside.

Aside from the distinct colors found in the changing leaves, probably the most emblematic symbol of the autumn season is the pumpkin. Associated both with the harvest, and with the much anticipated Halloween holiday, pumpkins immediately bring to mind this time of the year.

Decorative pumpkins can be scattered throughout the inside and outside of the house to bring the spirit of the season to your home. If you don’t want to deal with the eventual mess of a rotting piece of fruit, ceramic pieces can be purchased with similar characteristics. Supplement your pumpkin arrangements with a variety of colorful decorative gourds.

One creative way to decorate with pumpkins is to remove the top, scoop out the insides, and use the piece as a flower vase. You can also get creative with gourds, applying a similar procedure and using the tiny pieces as candle holders. Unfortunately both of these items are only temporary, and you have to pay attention to the solidity of the fruits as they begin to rot.

An inherent characteristic of autumn is that the heat of summer is starting to fail, and it’s slowly getting colder and colder. You can play this up in your home by making the space as cozy as possible. Build a fire, light candles, and make sure that there are plenty of snuggly blankets scattered around the house. You can even leave some blankets out on the front porch, making this outdoor space more comfortable in the last few months where it can still actually be used. Blankets are also another way to bring the bright earth tone colors of the season to your decorative designs. Just make certain that you bring those blankets in off the porch before a rain or snow fall comes.

Another great way to bring autumn into the home is to fill the air with the scents of the season. Baskets of apples, or cinnamon scented pinecones placed throughout the house are not only attractive, but also give off a lovely aroma that invokes the feeling of fall. Scented candles are another effective way to enhance the subtle autumnal nuances of the space.

With the world around you changing in such unique and lovely ways, it’s difficult to not want to bring some of that beauty into your own home. It not only invokes the spirit of the season, but helps connect you to the natural world, making your space a part of life itself, as it slowly cycles on its eternal journey.
