Rearranging Your Bedroom
by Jessica Ackerman

Rearranging a room can be the quickest, easiest, and least expensive ways of adding a whole new look. Simply by changing the way you have the furniture arranged, you can make a room look larger, cozier, or more inviting. You can often change the entire mood of a room, simply by moving things around and adding a few new accessories. There are many ways that you can rearrange your bedroom to add functionality and visual charm.

Find the Room's Focal Point

One of the first steps when decorating any room is to find the room's focal point. This could be an architectural feature within the room, such as a fireplace or a large bay window. Or, you could have created a focal point yourself with a large ornate headboard or an antique piece of furniture. Either way, you want to be sure when rearranging your furniture that you do it in a way that will retain the beauty of the room's focal point. For example, if the room has a fireplace, use the mantel to display a vase of fresh flowers, or add decoratively framed family photos. If you have a beautiful headboard, place the bed on a wall that doesn't have windows, doors or other obstructions so that it can become the wall's centerpiece.

Measure and Plan Carefully

Bedroom furniture can be quite heavy, so when planning to rearrange the furniture, you should measure carefully first. Using a ruler or tape measure, carefully measure and take notes of all the furniture dimensions. Then, measure the walls, making note of the placement and width of the windows and doors. Also, make note of the placement of heating vents, phone jacks, power outlets, or television hookups, so that you can plan accordingly. Drawing a floor plan onto graph paper and making paper cutouts of your furniture can be a great way to plan before you start moving furniture. Be sure to allow room for doors to open and close properly, and take care to plan adequate walkways within the room.

Redefining Your Spaces

Changing the way you use your bedroom space is another way to rearrange your bedroom. By using a few creative techniques, you can add functionality to the room that didn't even exist previously. For example, by moving your bed and dresser to one side of the room, you could create enough space to add a small desk and bookshelf. This could create a small office in one corner of your bedroom. You could also add a comfortable chair, ottoman and small bookcase to add a reading corner to your bedroom. These small nooks can be functional while adding some visual interest to the room.

Adding Change and Excitement

While rearranging your bedroom, you can also add a fresh new look by changing the color scheme or by altering one or two decorating details within the room. For example, if your bedroom utilizes predominantly neutral shades, you can add an exciting touch of color by adding pink and black bedding, a few pink accessories, and perhaps black and pink window toppers. Because of the overall neutral coloring of the room, you can add colored accessories such as this to instantly change the overall color and look of the room for very little cost or effort.
