Decorating with Cheap Teen Furniture
by Veronica Smith

Decorating a teen's bedroom or game room doesn't have to be an expensive proposition. Fortunately, teens are often fond of a more eclectic look, which can easily be created on a budget. This style of decorating can be a lot of fun, and can reflect the style and personal creativity of the teen. In fact, most teenagers enjoy projects that focus on creating fun and funky furniture from old or even discarded furniture pieces.

Discount Store Furniture

Discount stores can be a great place to shop for cheap teen furniture. Plastic furniture, bean bag chairs and inflatable furniture can be a fun way of adding extra seating to a teen's room, without the need to spend a lot of money. In addition to being inexpensive, these types of furniture are usually fun for teens to use, and in the case of inflatable furniture, can even be stored in a closet until they are needed when friends come to visit. Inexpensive prefabricated furniture such as bookcases are also very useful for decorating a teen's bedroom on a budget. Plastic egg or milk crates are also inexpensive items which are both fun and functional. These crates make great storage bins, or try laying them on their side and stacking them for a unique storage unit. Discount stores are also a great place to find other types of decorating accessories, such as lamps, bedding and window treatments.

Second Hand Furniture

Used furniture can be given new life in a teen's room, sometimes with nothing other than a fresh coat of paint to give the piece a new look. Shopping at second hand shops, garage sales, flea markets, or online auction sites are great ways to find old furniture at a great price. These older items are often sturdier than new furniture, and have a great one-of-a-kind eclectic look that teens love. Refinish old furniture pieces with interesting paint color combinations, or try stenciling for a unique look. Even items like an old loveseat or small sofa can be used effectively in a teen's bedroom, especially when given a fresh new look with a colorful slipcover.

Patio Furniture for a Fun Teen Retreat

Another fun idea for cheap teen furniture includes using outdoor lawn furniture. This can be especially effective when an outdoors decorating theme is used in the room, such as a beach theme. Inexpensive folding lawn chairs, lounge chairs, and patio tables can provide fun seating for friends.

Creating Teen Furniture from Little Kids Furniture

Another way to save on money for a teen's bedroom is to repurpose furniture items that the teen used in their bedroom when they were a child. A repainted wooden toy chest can make a great storage trunk for video game equipment, and can even double as extra seating if a cushion is added to the top. Children's furniture is often painted or finished with nursery patterns, but with a bright new coat of paint, childhood furniture items such as bookshelves, tables and other pieces can take on a new life in a teen's bedroom.
