How to Completely Change a Room with Color
by Jessica Ackerman

The easiest way to dramatically change the look of a room is with color. The colors you choose when decorating a room can even change the appearance of size. For the price of paint or another type of wall covering you can easily change the room by adding the illusion of square footage and make it feel more open and airy. A simple change in hue can also visually raise or lower a ceiling. Consider the following ways to completely change a room with color, and give any room in your home a totally new and improved look without tearing down walls.

Make Ceilings Appear Taller

Low ceilings can make a space feel as if it is closing in, even if it is not a small room. Fortunately it is possible to change the appearance and height with color. Choose white for low ceilings to give the room the illusion of height, or paint the ceiling the same color as the walls - if the walls are painted in a light cool color. A darker color will change the appearance of the space, but it will make the ceiling appear lower than ever. Also, opt for floor coverings that are lighter in color. Darker floors can also visually bring the ceilings down.

Make the Entire Room Look Larger

Light monochromatic colors have the power to change a space and make a room look and feel larger than it actually is. Select either a cool hue, white, or beige, and repeat the chosen color on other surfaces. In addition, select furniture and flooring that match closely in color. Minimize window coverings, and let in as much light as possible to make the entire room appear larger and far more spacious.

How to Widen the Appearance of a Narrow Room

A room that is long and narrow looks less than adequate, but it can be made to appear wider and more expensive with the right application of color. Apply darker colors to the width, and lighter colors to the length. This will provide the illusion of size and change the space to make it look considerably wider than it really is.

How to Visually Lower a Very High Ceiling

A very high ceiling that is less than attractive or impressive can be visually lowered and camouflaged with a darker hue. Select deep gray, dark blue, forest green or even chocolate brown to bring the height of the ceiling down while hiding any flaws. Although a darker color will visually lower the height of the ceiling, with adequate lighting the darker color will not bring down the design and appeal of the room.

Make a Space Feel Cozier and More Inviting

Rich warm colors can change the look and feel of a larger room and make it feel cozier and more inviting. Select a temperate neutral color, and offset it with wainscoting and trim painted in a matching or contrasting color. For example, change a large room by coating the walls in a rich shade of cocoa brown, and install wainscoting around the perimeter. Top the wainscoting with decorative trim, and paint the trim a shade of powdery blue or sea foam green. Select a hue according to your preference, and use wall color to visually enhance and completely change the look of a space that could use a dramatic change.
