Decorating Tips for Dining Room Walls
by Jessica Ackerman

There are plenty of different ways to decorate your dining room walls. For the most part, let your choices be guided by the overall style of decorating in the room. For example, if you have a traditionally designed room, you probably wouldn't want to use modern abstract wall art. Instead, framed paintings would probably be more complementary. On the other hand, if you have a more eclectic style of decorating, you can mix and match different styles to create an interesting and pleasing effect. Here are some decorating tips for dining room walls to help get your design ideas flowing.

Choosing Your Overall Color Palette

If you already have a color palette chosen for your dining room, select decorating accessories and art that blend or complement that palette. Choosing colors that work well with the overall colors in the room will help make everything look like it "belongs" in the room. Of course, adding an accent color can also be a great way of creating a focal point. For example, if your dining room is decorated in yellows and white, adding some wall art or a picture frame that provides a dash or black, red, green or blue can add a nice touch. If you are redecorating and need some home décor dining room ideas in regards to color, think about how different colors can affect the room's mood. Red can add an attractive look when used in the dining room, whether you choose a warm brick red or even a brighter shade. Red is commonly used in restaurants to provide a pleasurable dining experience. Green, yellow, cream and shades of orange can also work well. However, many people choose to steer clear of using blue in the dining room, as it's often thought to be detrimental to the dining experience.

Accentuate Your Color Palette with Wall Art

Adding wall art to the dining room is one of the best ways to add character, interest and overall charm. Don't feel limited to just decorative art, because there are many functional pieces you can add to the dining room which can be useful as well as beautiful. When decorating dining room walls, shelves can add visual appeal as well as useful space. You can also hang baskets or dishes on the wall to add a nice dining related touch. Framed paintings and prints can add a decorative flair to the dining room. In fact, some people obtain the inspiration for all their home décor dining room ideas from a single painting or print. By using a piece of art as your overall inspiration, you can often determine your color palette as well as your decorating theme. For example, if you have a favorite painting of a basket of fruit, you could match the colors of red, yellow and cream from the painting for the color scheme. Then, go with an overall fruit theme in the rest of the room to nicely tie everything together. This method of decorating often creates a very coordinated decorator look, without too much effort.
