Fourth of July: Patio Looks in Red, White and Blue
by Alyssa Davis

If you're planning a Fourth of July picnic this year for family and friends, why not decorate your outdoor patio in a patriotic theme? Adding red, white and blue touches to your patio is fun and easy, and will make your picnic just a bit more enjoyable. Here are some tips that you can use to transform your ordinary patio into the perfect Fourth of July picnic venue.

Add Fun Holiday Lighting

There are plenty of interesting outdoor lighting options that you can utilize for a patriotic look. You could combine strings of red, white and blue lights for an interesting effect. There are even specialty string lights available that include flag lights, which can be a lot of fun to decorate with. Or, use red, white and blue candles to add some light to your picnic after the sun goes down. Using red, white and blue candleholders for Citronella candles is a good way to combine a patriotic look with useful bug control.

Set an Attractive Holiday Table

Disposable plates and flatware are the perfect solution for a Fourth of July picnic. Buy plastic spoons, forks and knives in a combination of red, white and blue. Mix the colors together and arrange in wicker baskets on your table, with separate baskets for spoons, forks and knifes. Buy paper napkins that feature a flag pattern, or just use solid colored napkins in patriotic colors. Plain white foam plates are sturdy for outdoor picnics, and will blend in nicely with the holiday colors. However, if you want to add even more pizzazz to your table, you can use heavy paper plates with a flag motif.

Decorate with Flowers

Summer is the perfect time for floral decorations. Decorate the surrounding patio area with pots of red, white and blue petunias, or other easy to grow summer flowers. This is one decoration that you'll be able to enjoy for the rest of the summer season. Hanging baskets can also add a beautiful touch to your patio. You can create an inexpensive floral centerpiece with red and white carnations. Be sure to use a heavy vase so that your arrangement won't get knocked over by the wind. If you want to include some blue carnations, you'll need to plan ahead and create some the day before the picnic. Simply take a vase, fill about a quarter full of water, and add 20 drops of blue food coloring. Trim the stems of some white carnations at an angle, and place in the blue colored water for 24 hours. You'll see attractive streaks of blue throughout the white carnation petals. Combine your red, white and blue carnations in a vase, tie with a decorative ribbon, and enjoy.

Fourth of July Food

Of course, great food is one of the highlights of any picnic. Decorate a cake or cupcakes with red, white and blue icing. Or, create a dessert salad using cubes of cherry, blueberry and white grape flavored Jell-O. A fruit salad featuring chunks of watermelon, honeydew and blueberries can also add a decorative and delicious touch to your picnic table.
