Start the New Year with Fresh Paint
by Alyssa Davis

A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for the winter blahs, giving you a refreshing look for the new upcoming year. Paint is one of the least expensive and easiest ways to update a room, allowing you to quickly change the mood of the room or even the overall style. You can choose to paint a single room of your home, or get ambitious and give every room a fresh coat of paint for a really updated look.

Using Paint to Make Rooms Appear Larger

If you have a room in your home that you would like to appear larger, repainting it using a lighter neutral shade can give you a more spacious look. Selecting a shade that is similar to the furnishings in the room is a good way to make the walls appear to recede, which can make the room also appear to be larger. In addition to light neutral shades, light pastels can also be used effectively, such as using a light blue to make a room appear both spacious and calming. Paint ceilings white to reflect more light in the room, as well as to make the room appear to be taller.

Creating a Cheerful Mood with Paint

If you want to reduce the dull gray look of winter in your home, select a cheerful warm shade such as yellow or a warm sunny apricot. Colors have the ability to affect a person's mood, and warm colors such as yellow, red and orange, even when used in small quantities as accent colors, can help create a happier and more energized frame of mind.

Creating a Warm and Cozy Spot with Paint

Although many times people have a desire to make a room look larger, there is also something to be said for creating areas within the home which have a cozy and intimate feel to them. This can be a good technique to use in a family room, bedroom, or in a reading room or office. Dark warm colors such as brown, burgundy, and burnt orange can make a room appear smaller, which is sometimes a nice effect when trying to create a more intimate environment. Colors such as hunter green and dark blue can give a room a sophisticated as well as comfortable look. If you feel these colors would be a bit too dark for your home, you can create a similar effect using these types of colors just a few shades lighter or perhaps in a more muted shade. Darker colored walls look great with natural woodwork, or with light painted trim, such as white, off-white or cream.

Using More than One Color in a Room

Using more than one color to paint a room can add a lot of interest and style. Try painting the lower portion of the wall a darker color, then paint the upper portions of the wall in a lighter shade, adding a chair rail to complete the look. Painting one wall in the room a darker accent color is a great way of using more dramatic colors, while still maintaining an overall light look to the room by painting the other walls in a lighter shade.
