10 Ways to Freshen Your Home for Spring
by Kenneth McCall

Ahhh, spring! It’s the glorious time of year when we can crawl out from under our heavy down comforters and breathe in the fresh air. Here are a few ideas – beyond the requisite yearly spring cleaning – to help you get your home ready for this delightful season.

Fresh Flowers

spring front porchDaffodils, tulips, and crocuses – these are among the first flowers to poke their heads up from the sleepy, winter ground. A clear vase, bursting with artfully-arranged red or yellow tulips, will add a splash of color to your coffee table. Fill the vase often with clean water to extend the life of the flowers and discard them when they begin to brown and wither.

Flower Boxes

To enjoy flowers that will last longer than those picked for displaying in a vase, take a colorful tip from Europe: consider planting red geraniums in a window box. (Look in home improvement and gardening stores for inexpensive, plastic versions.) It’s a charming, classic look that can perk up your patio or balcony, too.

Splashy Bath Towels, Candles, Seashells

Your bathroom may need a little lift, especially if your color scheme is dark – like navy blue, burgundy, chocolate brown, and forest green. But it’s a simple fix: purchase two or more luxurious bath towels – in vibrant colors like salmon, yellow, and turquoise blue – to brighten things up considerably. Contrasting hand towels or washcloths can be fun, too, if you have the budget.

Add a trio of candles in scents that remind you of the ocean to create the ambiance of vacationing on a sunny beach. A few seashells, scattered casually on the countertop, will complete the seaside look.

Bed Linen

There is nothing quite like a set of fresh sheets to make a bedroom more inviting. Look for sheet sets in pastel and citrus colors; alternately choose something with a pretty floral print. Shop the sales and look for clearance sets; you will be able to afford the softer sheets with a high thread count. Put heavy blankets away in storage, opting for lighter fabrics.

Crystals, Mirrors, Stained Glass Sun Catchers

Let the sunshine in! Crystals, mystical in their own right, make excellent sun catchers. Hang up a few on clear strings near a sunny window to throw rainbows of light around the room. For a more refined look, mirrors can be used to reflect and multiply light; sun catchers made of stained glass are beautiful, too.

Table Setting

Have you put away the snowman table cloth yet? It’s time to store Frosty with your other winter items and choose something more colorful – like flowers or fruits – to adorn your table. If you have a wood table that is in good shape, forgo a tablecloth in favor of a few sturdy placemats in cheerful colors.

Other ideas for welcoming spring include painting a wall in your home a sunny color – like pale yellow – to offer change and a little excitement. Wall art, too, can add dimension and depth to a room – look for flowers, landscapes, glowing sunsets, wildlife, or anything else that makes you happy.
