Easy and Inexpensive Ways to Update Kitchen Cabinets
by Jessica Ackerman

Cabinets are one of the most expensive components of a kitchen, and they are a huge consideration when purchasing a home. Whether you plan on selling your home in the near future, or whether you plan on staying in your home, it is beneficial to update kitchen cabinets. The kitchen truly is the heart of the home, and with a few easy and inexpensive ways to update kitchen cabinets, the entire appearance of the room can be transformed into a room that looks fresh, stylish, and up-to-date.

Cabinets and Baskets

If you want to give a few kitchen cabinets a completely different and highly unique look, consider removing the doors and add wicker baskets to shelving. After removing the doors and hardware, cover the holes and any indentations with decorative inlay bands. Decorative wood banding adds a distinctive touch to cabinetry while covering flaws around edges, and it is easy to apply with wood glue.

Choose stylish rectangular wicker baskets that fit the open spaces. Baskets are perfect for storing snacks, bread, napkins, paper plates, or anything else that can safely be stored in baskets. This is an inexpensive way to update kitchen cabinets and give them an entirely new look while adding distinct style to the room.

Add Glass to Existing Doors

Update old and tired paneled wood cabinetry with glass. Remove cabinet doors along with the trim that holds on the center panels. Replace the wood panels with panes of glass, and securely attach them with glazing points. When looking to update cabinetry with glass you will find many different styles and varieties from basic smoked glass to fancy etched pieces. Finish the edges around the glass with glazing putty. This will help hold the glass in place and keep it from rattling, and when cabinet doors are reinstalled the glass will give the kitchen a stylish new look.

Update Hardware

One of the easiest ways to update old kitchen cabinets is with new knobs and handles. Hardware options are virtually endless, and they can match a specific theme, color, or style. From polished brass to painted porcelain, you will find the hardware you need to update your cabinetry for a completely different appearance. Even cabinets that never had knobs and pulls and be outfitted with new hardware. Use a level and a straightedge to determine the proper location of the holes, and update the doors and drawers with fancy new knobs and impressive new handles.

Add Sliding Shelves

Changing the exterior appearance of cabinets is not the only way to update an outdated kitchen. Consider adding sliding shelves in place of stationary shelving that makes finding and reaching necessities a major inconvenience. Sliding shelves allow complete access of available cabinet space, and this is one of the most practical ways to update storage. They will allow the use of every inch of available room while making cabinetry seem much newer and more functional than ever. Choose high-quality hardware to support sliding shelves. You will appreciate the convenience and practicality of shelves that can be fully accessed, and they will add more storage without the addition and expense of new kitchen cabinets.

As long as cabinet frames are sound, update what you have. It really is very easy to update cabinetry and give the most popular room in the house a completely different appearance. With the addition of glass in wood paneled doors, new hardware, or even baskets to hold items in cabinets without doors, you can give your kitchen a stylish new look without spending a small fortune in the process.
