7 Great Ways to Make Your Kitchen Stand Out
by Patrick Heath

Nowadays, kitchen designs all seem to be the same, to some extent. Whether it’s the basic function, necessary layout or the essential appliances, even an expertly designed kitchen often looks much like it evolved from a cookie-cutter mold. That doesn’t have to be the case though, and there are many ways to give your kitchen that different look and feel. Many people think that throwing around some flowers and fruits adds a special touch to their kitchen, but that doesn’t do much to make it pop. Here are some great ideas that will differentiate your kitchen from the rest.

1: Use Glass as a Building Material

Glass is usually seen more in accessories for the kitchen, and is overlooked as an actual building material, due to concerns about its durability and heat-resistance. The fact is that a glass countertop is just as strong, heat-resistant and durable as stone. Many airports and high-end night clubs feature glass counter-tops, and using it in your home can make your kitchen sparkle.

2: Add Some Movement to the Backsplash

Tradition has always called for a basic 4 x 4 backsplash comprised of glazed tile. Lately there has been a trend towards using tiles of differing sizes, and made from different materials, such as porcelain, glass or stone. Many designers now suggest a unique staggered pattern, where the materials and tile shapes would alternate. This will help create movement in the wall.

3: Consider Unconventional Storage

So, your mother used to store the plates in the first cupboard to the left of the sink. That doesn’t mean you have to set your kitchen up the same way. There is usually a typical manner in which a kitchen is set up, both for aesthetic and convenience purposes, but there is nothing that says you must conform. Consider placing your most frequently used items, or items accessed by your children in low-lying pull out drawers or shelves.

4: Go for Unique Lighting Fixtures

The typical kitchen light fixtures can make your atmosphere feel cold and uninviting. Why not make your kitchen feel more cozy by adding a type of hall lighting or a chandelier? This is an especially great idea if you have an open floor plan. A kitchen isn’t really thought of as a meeting or sitting area, but there is no reason that it can’t be.

5: Vary the Metal Finishes

Too many home owners pick a single metal finish and remain committed to it throughout the entire home. A brushed nickel finish will have a subtle gold undertone, and many metals play off the color of one another. Varying the colors in your kitchen can give your home a more complex and sophisticated look and feel.

6: Think Outside the Box

Try to see the potential pattern or design ideas of your kitchen in a different perspective. A few subtle changes can alter the entire look of your space. If your backsplash tiles are designed to go one way, why not install them another way and create some unique lines? Turning even just a few tiles can change the feel into one that is more contemporary and warm.

7: Install or Upgrade a Range Hood

Many families gather in the kitchen when a meal is being prepared, and a range hood can make sure that it is an inviting area. You can add a touch of style with a wonderfully crafted range hood, while also being able to keep a clean and inviting atmosphere for your family and guests. Steam, smoke, vapors and unbearable heat will quickly drive everyone from the room. A quality range hood can help you avoid this.
