Part of the fun of home decorating is deciding what to hang on the walls. There is an almost endless number of options, since so many things can be used as artistic wall decor. You can also use functional and yet decorative items as part of your overall wall display. This method can be especially effective when decorating the kitchen, since almost everyone can use a little bit of extra kitchen storage space.
Functional and Yet Decorative Items
Utilizing the wall space in the kitchen for decorative and yet functional items is a great way to add visual interest while also maximizing your storage space. Many kitchen utensils and accessories are simply too pretty or interesting to hide in a closed cabinet. Instead, hang them from a rack on the walls to add a touch of style, while also keeping them close at hand. A wall-mounted spice rack is often an excellent addition to a kitchen wall.
Choose a spice rack with opaque containers to protect the spices from light, and make sure they are clearly marked. You'll no doubt find it much easier to find the spices you need for cooking when you hang the rack on the wall, instead of having to dig through cramped cabinet.
Decorative wicker baskets are also a great addition to the kitchen wall. These somewhat bulky items can take up valuable cabinet space, so hanging them on the wall solves their storage dilemma in addition to adding a decorative touch to the room. Wall shelves can also be installed to hold a myriad of useful and yet decorative items, such as a wine glass collection or kitchen canisters. This is also a great way to enjoy the beautiful look of fine china serving pieces that you only use for special occasions.
Creative Ways to Hang Pots
Although pot racks that suspend from the ceiling are always popular, there are also creative ways to hang pots on the kitchen walls. Hanging a piece of pegboard which has been painted to give it a decorative look can be a great way to utilize the wall space for pots and pans that you use frequently. You could also install decorative hooks directly on the kitchen wall for the purpose of hanging pots. Wall shelves are also an excellent option for displaying pots and pans. In fact, wall shelves can work especially well for pots and pans that do not have a hanging loop at the end of their handles.
Decorating Dining Room Walls to Blend with the Kitchen
If your dining room is connected to your kitchen, you might want to continue the wall decorating theme into this room as well. This can provide a very coordinated look, and provide even more storage space. If you're trying to come up with home decor dining room ideas, take a look at what you've already done in the kitchen. For example, if you've displayed some of your fine china pieces on the kitchen wall, you might also want to hang a few pieces on the dining room wall as well. By decorating dining room walls to match the kitchen, you'll be visually tying the two rooms together, which can make the rooms appear connected and therefore more spacious.
