How to Decorate Without a Headboard
by Jessica Ackerman

Although headboards are a common component of most beds, not all have them. In fact, you might have purposely chosen a bed style that didn't include a headboard to allow for other decorating methods. There many different techniques that you can use to decorate without a headboard that can add beauty to your bedroom.

Create a Canopy with Draped Fabric

If your bed doesn't have a headboard, you can use draped fabric to create a canopy at the head of the bed. The fabric can be attached at the center of the wall behind the head of the bed, allowing it to drape down on either side, securing it to the wall on both sides if desired. You can also create an interesting look with fabric on the wall behind the head of the bed by using a decorative rod. Hang the rod in a centered position above the bed, and then drape fabric over the rod, or gather it on the rod just as you would a curtain.

Paint Solutions that Work Behind the Head of a Bed

You can also paint the wall behind the bed to simulate the look of a headboard. Painting a simple square, rectangular or rounded shape could work well, or you could use faux painting techniques to create a realistic looking headboard effect. Paint techniques also work well when combined with wall art. For example, painting a large square shape behind the bed can provide the perfect frame for a piece of wall art, or several framed pieces of art.

Mirror Art as a Headboard

Mirrors work well when decorating a bedroom, and can also be used in place of a headboard. When attaching mirrors to the wall at the head of the bed, always be sure to use the proper hardware such as wall anchor bolts, to insure that the mirror doesn't fall. One large mirror that is the width of the bed can be used to add drama, or you can combine several smaller mirrors to create an interesting visual effect. Painted mirrors, such as wall art that is created on a mirrored surface, can also be used at the head of a bed to add an eye-catching touch.

Decorating with Photos

Photos can add a very personalized touch to the bedroom. You can use a collection of framed photographs at the head of the bed, arranging them in an interesting fashion. Using many photographs to create a photo collage, which can then be framed, is also an interesting technique to use. You can use any kind of photograph that appeals to you or which works well with the overall style of the room. For example, vintage family photographs can look nice in a vintage-styled bedroom, while photos of a vacation trip to Arizona could work well for a room decorated in a Southwestern style. Other Western decorating ideas could include hanging cowboy hats, horseshoes, or other items that have a Western flair.

Substitute Pillows for a Headboard

Another good way to decorate without a headboard is to use a large pile of pillows. Combining large and small pillows can add an interesting and varied appearance. To create the best look, pile larger pillows at the head of the bed against the wall itself. Then, fill in the spaces with smaller pillows.
