Tasteful Holiday Decorations for the Office
by Jessica Ackerman

Decorating your office requires a lot more finesse than you are required to use at home, since your goal is to celebrate the season without becoming a distraction to everyone working around you. Tasteful holiday decorations do not have to be boring, nor should you feel forced to limit your decorations to something that you can easily hide under the desk if the boss comes around. Instead, take a look at these quick tips for finding tasteful holiday decorations for the office.

Small, Lighted Trees

Although a large decorated and lighted tree may be out of the question for your office or cubicle, most companies will allow a very small tree, typically three feet or less in height, in your office, as long as the lights are steady instead of blinking and none of the ornaments are offensive. A small, lighted tree costs anywhere from $25 and up, depending on where you purchase it, so the budget can be easily kept under control. You can use a doily instead of a tree skirt, or even a placement with holiday décor.

Many different Christmas retailers offer small holiday trees, whether you are looking for a real tree that is used once and discarded or a faux tree that can be reused every year. You can also purchase them online from many popular retailers, including many diverse Christmas specialty shops. Just ensure that the decorations are tasteful, and avoid childish motifs or sensitive subjects (such as politics, religion, sexual orientation, physical disabilities, and so on).

Ornaments as Decorations

To decorate tastefully but simply, use a few ornaments to decorate your cubicle and still celebrate the holiday with style. For instance, a snowman or sleigh stood in a corner with a few pinecones and a bough of evergreen look beautiful and stylish, but still tasteful and simple at the same time. Use red ribbon to finish the look of the holiday sleigh, and hang Christmas cards received at the office to add a personal touch.

Hanging the cards is very easy, and does not require any special tools or instructions. Simply line up the card in the position that you want, against a wall, doorframe, or the edge of your computer monitor even, and use tape to adhere the card. If it is very heavy, you may have to use two pieces, but normally a small strip at the top of the card suffices. Never use a stapler to hang the cards if you are hoping to affix to a computer monitor, but staples are a great idea if you are hanging on a corkboard or similar surface.

Banner

One of the easiest and simplest tasteful decorations is a holiday banner, hung on a wall or in a doorway using tape or staples to anchor. You can use a simple holiday greeting (such as Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays) to welcome people to your personal space, but be sure and speak with a manager about what slogans or greetings are acceptable in your workplace before hanging to avoid potential problems.
