Outdoor kitchens are becoming very popular, especially for those who enjoy entertaining family and friends on a regular basis. Entertaining outdoors can be a great way of enjoying the warm weather, and can be much more pleasant than spending time indoors. Creating an outdoor kitchen can be a great way of adding more functionality and style to your patio or deck. It's certainly possible to go all out and create an elaborate cooking space, but if you're like most people, you may be more interested in budget outdoor kitchens. Fortunately, creating a do it yourself outdoor kitchen is within the skill set of most do-it-yourself homeowners.
Basic Planning Tips
Many of the design techniques used in budget outdoor kitchens will be the same as if you were planning a more elaborate kitchen. Convenience and usability is important, regardless of whether you are cooking indoors or out. Be sure to plan for plenty of counter space, since adequate work space is very important when cooking. You'll also want to plan for storage areas, especially if your outdoor kitchen is a significant distance from your indoor kitchen. After all, you don't want to spend all your time making trips back and forth from the house when cooking and entertaining outdoors. Plan to have cabinets that can be used for the items you use most frequently, such as your grill brush, utensils, plates, spices, and paper products. An extra cabinet for pans can also be quite handy, if you have the budget for it. It's also important to plan an efficient layout for your kitchen area. Minimally, you will need a grill or cooking surface in your outdoor kitchen, with workspace located nearby. Be sure to install any cabinets within easy access of the cooking area. However, always be careful to keep any materials at least several inches away from the hot grill or cooking surface. If you are planning to install an outdoor refrigerator or sink, position it within easy access of the cooking area as well. Keep foot traffic in mind, and plan your work space so that you'll be able to cook, serve and clean up without getting in the way of your guests.
Easy Ways to Save Money
Durability is of the utmost importance when planning your outdoor kitchen. Choose materials that will be able to stand up to the elements. You'll have a little more leeway if you're adding your do-it-yourself outdoor kitchen in a protected area of the patio or deck. However, remember that the wind may still blow rain into the area. If you already have electricity on your patio or deck, make sure it is adequate to support any appliances you plan to use. Running water pipes to the patio is usually one of the most expensive parts of the job. If you do want to install a sink, try to keep it as close to the other plumbing in your home as possible to save money. Running a gas line can also be expensive. This is why those on a budget usually opt for grills or cooking surfaces that can utilize propane tanks. However, never try to save money on a cheap grill or cooking surface, since in the end you'll probably spend more money replacing it. Stainless steel is a good choice for outdoor cooking appliances. If your patio doesn't have an overhead roof, you can consider saving money by using an inexpensive patio cover. You'll also want to make sure to choose weather-resistant cabinetry and countertops so that you don't have to spend more money later to replace them.
