Choosing Paint Colors for Bedrooms
by Joey Pebble

The bedroom is a place where you want to feel comfortable and relaxed. The color palette in this space should produce an environment that enfolds you in warmth and ease, filling the air with a sense of serenity that will send you drifting off to a peaceful slumber each night. However, you have to take care not to create a color scheme that is too peaceful or you might find yourself having trouble crawling from your bed into the light of day each morning.

Earth Tones in a Bedroom

Earth tones tend to evoke a sense of warmth and hearth that can make a space particularly inviting. Consisting of soft browns, tans, amber hues, gentle golds, and understated grays, earth tones symbolize the safety and security of wood and stone, creating a bedroom that feels inherently secure against the dangers of the world.

Traditionally, earth tones are used in contrasting patterns against one another, with deeper colors such as golds and amber hues contrasting understated colors such as tans and grays to create an environment that is similar in palette to a woodland scene. Greens or red can occasionally be brought in to add even more interest and details to the walls of the space.

Green Bedroom Paint Colors

Green tones are some of the most vibrant and energetic colors that are available. Symbolizing the teeming beauty of life, they can create a subtle interplay in a bedroom, contrasting vibrant energy with tranquil serenity. The result is a bedroom that is peaceful, but which does not lull you into a sense of stupor.

Green wall paint can work well with a variety of colors, including reds, browns, blues, and darker earth tones. With green you have to be careful about picking the right shade. Darker tones can look unpleasant against the skin, while some lighter colors will have a sickly nauseous feeling.

Bedroom Blues

Blue is one of the most traditional bedroom paint colors because of its reputation for being peaceful and serene. Blue tends to make us think of a cloudless blue sky or a deep and pensive ocean. It is a color that is epic in its grandeur and yet almost sleepy in its demeanor. If you have trouble getting to sleep at night then the use of blue wall paint can help to create a bedroom that lulls you into a sense of quiet contentment.

With blue you have to be careful about creating a space that is too calm, as it can make it difficult to motivate. Red and green accents placed throughout can help, as can inspirational works of art and décor.

Red Bedroom Wall Colors

Red is a controversial color in bedroom paint designs. It represents some of the most vibrant and volatile hues available, and if overused, it can create a space that is irritating, causing you to feel agitated and jumpy when stuck in the environment for too long. That is obviously a problem in the bedroom, where you are supposed to be relaxing and falling asleep.

However, red is also the color of passion and love, and so its use in a bedroom can on occasion be important. The best way to use these colors is either as accent points in a paint palette dominated by a calmer hue, or as an occasional design, brought out in accessories on special, romantic evenings.
