Outdoor Decorating Tips for Patio Fun
by Alyssa Davis

If you are lucky enough to have an outdoor patio, you probably enjoy using it during the warmer months to relax with your family and entertain friends. Spring, summer and autumn are all great times to enjoy an outdoor patio. However, with a few outdoor decorating tips, you can add extra style and functionality to your patio for even more fun.

Add a Touch of Nature

Using flowers, greenery and other plants in and around the patio area is a great way of blending your patio in with the great outdoors. Plants are very versatile, and as the seasons change, you can also add different plants to keep your decorating scheme fresh and exciting. During the summer months, add plenty of flowering plants to add a punch of color. Hanging baskets of cascading vine plants look beautiful when hung from the underside of your patio roof. You can also add large planters filled with an assortment of flowering plants. The patio is also a great location for a potted herb garden, which can be beautiful, fragrant and useful all at the same time. You might even want to include a few garden plants, such as a cherry tomato or pepper plant. As autumn approaches, add some beautiful potted mums, which will add color even during the cooler days. When decorating your patio with plants, don't feel limited to just the patio area. The entire surrounding yard serves as a backdrop for your patio, so any flower gardens or yard plantings that are visible from the patio will also add to the decorative look.

Brighten the Patio with Color

Outdoor patios look especially attractive when you add bright splashes of color. Try sprucing up your patio furniture with new cushions in bold colors. If your patio is not under a roof, add a bright umbrella to your patio table. Colorful market umbrellas are beautiful as well as functional, and can also be used to provide a bit of welcoming shade to your patio area. If your patio is screened, hang patio blinds on the sunniest side to offer some protection from the blazing sun to add beauty to and enhance the relaxing atmosphere. Fun patio lighting can also be a great way to add color. You can find patio light strings in almost every color of the rainbow. You can also enhance the overall theme of your patio by purchasing lights in fun shapes, such as chili peppers, flamingos or small lanterns.

Fun and Funky Themes for the Patio

Add a touch of fun and whimsy to your patio by setting an overall theme. Patio decorations are often quite inexpensive, so you can even change your theme periodically for added interest. If you are planning an outdoor picnic or cookout, try adding a few Hawaiian decorating ideas for fun. Include a few potted tropical plants, bamboo print cushions, or a thatched patio umbrella to add a fun Hawaiian beach theme. Surround the patio area with tiki torches for a great look after dark. Serve your guests tropical drinks, give everyone a lei, and let the summer fun begin.
