Peaceful Bedroom Tips

The bedroom is the place where you close your eyes each night, and leave yourself totally vulnerable. That is why it is so important that this space be one that makes you feel, warm, safe, and peaceful. It should invite you in like a comforting blanket, and keep you warm while you drift gently off to sleep.

If that isn't the way you feel in your bedroom, try the following tips to try and create a space which is a little more serene.

Color

Certain colors make us feel invigorated, or anxious, or peaceful. These reactions are part of our collective unconscious, and they affect our behaviors in very subtle ways.

To create a bedroom which is more relaxing, try using either blues or greens to create a soothing palette. Blue brings up memories of oceans or of cloudless skies, while green makes us think of plants and forests, making both of these colors particularly calming. Brown tones are also relaxed colors which often feel warm and inviting.

Texture

Texture is a subtle element that adds a secret dimension to a rooms design. In a bedroom, soft textures can be added throughout the space in velvet curtains, lush throw pillows, and thick carpeting. Heavier textures such as cotton will make the space feel warmer and more snuggly, while lighter textures such as satin and silk will give the space a more sensual and flowing quality.

Lighting

Illumination is tied intimately to our level of alertness. When it is bright, we tend to be more awake, and when it is dark we tend to become more lethargic. This is part of our physiology.

To create a more peaceful bedroom, try using ambient mood lighting. This lets you to soften the light in the room, without completely turning it off, allowing you to gently ease yourself into a restful state. Mood lights can be purchased specifically for this, or you can turn regular fixtures into mood lights with the addition of a dimmer switch.

Make it Your Own

The most important thing you can do in a bedroom is be true to yourself. Nobody can tell you the best way to trigger your own relaxation, and even the most soothing ocean landscape can be troubling to someone who has a fear of water. That is why you have to be willing to experiment, and to listen to your own inner voice, in order to create a bedroom which truly calms your spirit.
