Making Your Patio Pretty and Fun

When decorating your home, it is important not only to take care of its interior but also of its outer features. One of the most important external aspects of your home that has a lot of potential is your patio. If you are fortunate enough to have a patio, it can be a great place to relax on a balmy summer evening or on a Sunday afternoon. You can find some easy ways to decorate it and make it a pleasant place to hang out.

One of the most important things to remember when furnishing or decorating a patio is that it is open to the elements at all times. This means that whatever you use has to be resistant to the heat of the sun and does not get too easily damaged by the rain or wind. Among the most weatherproof materials that are easy to find are teak, a hardwood that will last a long time, plastic, and slate, a natural stone that does not get damaged too easily.

So now that you have found the correct materials to use, how would you like to furnish the patio itself?

You may want to make it into a sociable place, in which case you can place a central table, surrounded by several seats. On the other hand, perhaps you would prefer it to be a more private kind of area, with a few wicker chairs and a sunshade so that you can read peacefully or laze quietly on a warm afternoon. Even though you may look straight on to your garden, you may also want to decorate your patio with some exotic potted plants. To make it look a little different, you may want to place some elegant ferns or rare cacti on the patio just to create its own special atmosphere. You could also include some more fun accessories like cute garden gnomes or gargoyles.

To jazz up your patio even more, put out an area rug. Make sure that the rug is machine washable, or you may even prefer something like a bamboo rug, which is more natural looking and will blend in with the garden surroundings. Scatter some soft throw pillows on the chairs for comfort.

And what about the night time? How do you illuminate your patio? You may fancy putting up some decorative lanterns. Chinese lanterns can give your patio a very magical, distinctive look, or you may prefer something a little more conventional, such as globes or even a fluorescent bulb enclosed within a watertight case. On a summer evening, you may want something a little more atmospheric, such as candles. In this case, scented candles are clearly the best as they provide a very special, intimate atmosphere.

Decorating your patio is very much up to you. You can make it your own special place, either for yourself or your friends. It certainly does not take too much effort, and with a little creativity you can make it into a very pleasant place to be.
