The new Samsung RSG309AARS LCD refrigerator with apps is the latest release from the electronic giant Samsung. Now, not only can you easily manage the type of ice you desire on the face of your fridge, you can also manage your tasks for the day and update your Twitter on an 8” LCD digital display. Too much? It may seem like it, but it is actually quite convenient.
Not only can you connect to the social network while filling your cup with ice water, you can also leave your kids messages with the memo app. Want to have a better chance of your kids taking the garbage out or remembering to take important papers to school in the morning? Simply leave them a note they can’t avoid as they pull the o.j. and milk from the fridge.
There are also other useful apps – Picasa Photos (replace magnets and 4x6’s with slideshows), Pandora (play your favorite music while you cook), Calendar (keep your family’s appointments scheduled in an easily accessible place) and Epicurious Recipes (no longer do bulky recipe books have to take up counter space). The apps promote a clutter-free kitchen as well as turn the refrigerator into a convenient hub where family members can go to learn about upcoming events and appointments.
Confusion with the app aspect of this Samsung Refrigerator will most likely affect those who aren’t technically savvy. First of all, it’s important to know that the refrigerator’s apps connect to the internet via wifi, not 3G. Therefore, if you don’t have a wireless modem in your house, the refrigerator’s apps will not work to the best of their ability. Apps like Memo and Calendar that don’t require internet connection will still work without a household wireless modem, but other apps like Twitter, Picassa, Pandora and Epicurious, which do require internet connection, will not work without such a modem.
Everything about the refrigerator, besides that related to the LCD screen, is fairly similar to Samsung’s non-LCD refrigerator that has a retail of $2,999 - $500 less than the LCD refrigerator that has a retail of $3,499. So, it’s good to ask: is an LCD screen with apps you can download on your phone worth $500?
As usual with Samsung’s high-end refrigerators, everything about the internals of the fridge is state-of-the-art. The refrigerator is cooled by the Twin Cooling Plus System® that keeps food fresher longer. The FlexZone Drawer™ is also built into the fridge. If you have younger kids, this is a great feature. Your kids won’t be hollering for your assistance to reach their favorite drinks at the top of the fridge. It will be at their chest’s height. The FlexZone Drawer™ is also great for entertaining.
Other premium features included in the Samsung LCD refrigerator are the external filtered water and ice dispenser, the EZ-Open Handle™ on the freezer and FlexZone Drawer, the Auto Pull Out™ upper freezer drawer and crisp LED lighting that promotes great visibility and energy saving.
Because the refrigerator is fairly new, it is only available in one finish, size and type – the stainless steel, 28 cu. ft. French door model. However, if the refrigerator stays on Samsung’s line, which it inevitability will given the growing app-obsessed population, other finishes will probably become available.
