When you're decorating your home, the things that get the most attention are probably the floors and the walls - but after you've chosen the carpet and the wallpaper there's plenty of other things to think about.
What about your windows, for example? Will you be using roller blinds or curtains? What sort of design and colour do you want? There are so many decisions to make when it comes to interior design. This handy guide will help you decide what to dress your windows with.
Advantages of Roller Blinds
There are a few reasons why you might want to choose roller blinds over curtains, they include:
- The ease of matching blinds to your decor
- The variety of designs that are available
- They generally have a lower cost than curtains
- A wide range of materials, with various options for light absorption
- They can be made to fit your window, and don't take up extra space in the room
Advantages of Curtains
-
They tend to look more luxurious than blinds
- They're less susceptible to damage than blinds
- It's easier to use curtains if you have unusually shaped windows
As you can see, if space is at a premium, or you want something that is light, airy, and modern roller blinds are a great choice. For a more "homey" feel, curtains are a better choice. Some people like to mix and match, using blinds in the bedroom where blocking out light is important, and also using blinds in the bathroom and the kitchen, where space tends to be at a premium. Other rooms, such as the living room and the study may have curtains - either because the warm and cosy feel produced by the curtains is desirable, or because the design of the room makes it too difficult to fit blinds to the windows.
Some people go for a compromise, with light blinds fitted into the window recess, and curtains used as an accent. The curtains tend to be tied back most of the time, only used occasionally to block out the glare from the sun when drawing the blinds would be too extreme.
Modern blinds are quite easy to install, and can easily be cut width-ways to fit most windows. You don't need to be a DIY expert to put them up, so don't feel like you have to opt for curtains just because you already have a curtain rail. If you feel like you need a change, treat yourself to whatever it is that you feel will make your home look the best, whether that's blinds or curtains.
Overall, the choice between roller blinds and curtains often comes down to personal preference. Blinds are certainly the modern and fashionable choice, but there's a lot to be said for tradition too.
