Creative Decorating Ideas for Romantic Small Bedrooms
by Jessica Ackerman

Just because your bedroom is small doesn't mean it has to lack style and charm. Small room size can often be an advantage when decorating a bedroom, as it can help provide an overall cozy and intimate look and appeal. If you have a small bedroom that you would like to turn into a romantic retreat, here are some tips that can help get you started:

Clean and De-Clutter

When decorating a small room, the first step should also be cleaning and de-cluttering the area. Too many furniture or decorating items in a small room will make it seem cramped, so reduce visual clutter whenever possible. Less is usually more when decorating a small room, so remove anything from the room that you don't absolutely need. Look for ways to reduce the amount of floor space needed by your furniture pieces, such as using a nightstand with storage drawers or a tall chest of drawers instead of large items such as a triple dresser. It's also important to keep the size of your furniture pieces proportional to the size of the room. For example, a full or queen size bed will work much better than a king size bed in a small bedroom.

Choosing a Color Theme

Romantic small bedrooms often look best when decorated with warm neutral colors. A soft sand color with pink undertones or a light shade of apricot can add a warm glow without overpowering a small room. Using a solid shade on the walls instead of patterned wallpaper can help the room look larger. A white ceiling will also make the room look larger. However, painting the ceiling the same color as the walls can also add a cozy look. Or, use a ceiling color several shades lighter than the walls.

Add Romantic Decorating Touches

Choose a comforter in an opulent fabric to make the bed a focal point. A pile of pillows stacked against the headboard can also add a romantic touch. Soft window treatments such as using draped swathes of fabric as window toppers over blinds can add an appealing touch while still providing privacy. If the bedroom has hardwood or tile floors, add one or more area rugs to provide warmth and softness. A group of candles arranged on the top of a high dresser can provide romantic lighting. Install a dimmer switch for the overhead lighting, and add one or more table lamps so that you can adjust the lighting within the room to match the mood. A vase of fresh flowers on the dresser or nightstand can also be quite romantic and appealing. In addition to visually romantic touches, add appealing scents and textures to the room. A satin brocade bedspread or a bowl of vanilla or jasmine scented potpourri can help to increase to overall sensuality of any bedroom. Music can also add a romantic touch to the room, as long as the electronics do not visually overpower the room. A small CD player or MP3 player and hidden speakers is often the best approach.
