Decorative Ideas With Room Dividers
by Joey Pebble

A room divider is a temporary, or semi temporary wall which is used to break up large rooms into different sections. These are often used in spaces such as studio apartments, where the building itself is lacking in architectural segmentation. While they don’t provide as much of a rigid outline as a real wall would, they do give you the ability to pick and choose the inherent layout of your environment. In this way, room dividers can be a powerful tool for creating and decorating your home.

There are a variety of different ready made room dividers that are available for purchase. These can feature such diverse materials as wrought iron, carved hardwood, rice paper, silk, cloth, and steel. While these can be quite expensive, the benefit of purchasing such pieces is that they often do not have to be physically fastened to the floor or walls. This allows them to be mobile, giving you the option of sliding the piece across a room to make spaces larger or smaller as necessary. Some of them even have tiny wheels to make them particularly mobile.

A less expensive option is to create your own room dividers. If you can build an attractive, sturdy, and durable frame, then you really have endless options. Fill the center of your framework design in with virtually anything including clear glass bricks, stained wooden dowels, translucent paper, decorative cloth, or plywood covered in mosaic chips.

A slightly easier option is to purchase wooden garden trellis from your local hardware store. They will often offer a wide selection of shape, size, and pattern options. Garden trellis can be easily painted or stained to match the look and style of your interior. The material can be bolted to walls, floor, or ceiling, and it is relatively easy to cut, allowing you to craft a walk way, or window space into it.

One of the best things about garden trellis is that it can be decorated in a variety of ways. Trail vines along its loops and lanes to create an attractive natural display. Place silk flowers and other floral accents in patterns of color across its sides. And of course, during the holiday season, Christmas lights can be looped through its holds to create a merry, festive look.

Another easy to install option for subdividing a large space is the use of decorative stringed pieces. This can include stringed beads or crystals, or even silk vines and other faux nature. Attach them to the ceiling using drawing pins to create a shimmering translucent curtain in the midst of the space, which can produce some interesting light filtering effects.

Curtains are a good way to carve out little nooks and corners of a larger space. The thick material can completely block out light and view from the rest of the room, creating an area which is both private, and secure. The use of lush rich materials can lend a sense of luxury to these crafted corners. If installed near a wall, the curtain can also be pulled back, held by a hook, allowing you to choose whether the space is open or not.

The great thing about room dividers is that they give you a kind of control over the nature of your interior that you don’t often get. Usually the architect who built the house determines how the inside of the space can be used and laid out. However room dividers allow you the freedom and control to lay everything out in any way that you like.
