Screened Porch Decorating Ideas in Time for Summer
by Alyssa Davis
A screened porch can be a great place to relax. Because the porch provides some protection from the elements, it can be used throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons, and even during the winter in warmer climates. Although some people have a tendency to utilize a screened porch as simply a back entryway into their home, or possibly as a mudroom, by utilizing some screened porch decorating ideas, you can turn this area into a useful and decorative part of your home.
Furnishing a Screened Porch
Patio furniture is often the best option when decorating a screened porch. Wicker, wood, and vinyl are all good choices when selecting furniture for the screened porch, depending on the look you are trying to achieve. A couple of chairs combined with a sofa, loveseat, or chaise lounge can provide adequate seating options. Drape a tapestry throw or soft light blanket across the sofa to provide a splash of color and provide cozy warmth on cool summer evenings. Use seat cushions on chairs to offer more comfort and add color, and a few throw pillows or floor seating pillows can add a nice touch. Include a table and chairs so that you can enjoy snacks and meals. Furniture pieces that can do double-duty, such as a storage bench or a coffee table that has a top that opens to provide interior storage, are also good choices.
Screened Porch Flooring Options
Many people prefer to choose easy to clean flooring options for a screened porch. Sheet vinyl flooring is a popular option, as are various forms of tile such as vinyl, stone, ceramic or glass. Choosing a flooring product that offers a non-skid surface is a good choice. You can also use throw rugs or a large area rug to provide warmth and color, while still allowing for easy cleaning.
Adding Storage Space
Most screened porches have at least one solid wall. Adding a high shelf to this wall can provide additional storage without interfering with furniture placement. Choosing end tables that have drawers can also add storage space, as can furniture that include hidden storage options. A storage bin on wheels can be slid under unobtrusively under a table, or use wicker baskets on the table to store items in a decorative fashion.
Lighting Options
Every screened porch needs some light so that it can be enjoyed after dark. In some cases, your screened porch might already have overhead lighting. You can also add other lighting options such as table lamps, floor lamps, or light fixtures that are designed to be attached to the wall. A decorative string of lights can also add a festive touch to the room, even if they don't provide a great deal of light. Candles and decorative lanterns are also a nice added touch.
Adding the Final Decorating Touches
There are many decorating styles that work well for a screened porch. Many people prefer a natural decorating theme, making floral and garden styles quite popular. Americana themes can also be a good approach. Add some wall art, perhaps a garden thermometer, and a beautiful vase of fresh flowers and you will have a decorative and relaxing area that you will really enjoy.
