Shabby chic is a very popular method of decorating which can add a lot of visual interest and comfort to your home without the need to spend a lot of money. Shabby chic bedroom decor can come from many sources, including antique shops, flea markets, and even garage sales. The overall style is one of relaxing comfort, and it generally features well-worn pieces of furniture, vintage fabrics, soft color palettes, and a variety of decorating accents that combine to provide a varied and visually interesting overall look.
Shabby Chic Bedroom Decor: Giving New Life to Old Accessories
One of the best ways of decorating a bedroom in the shabby chic style is to raid your attic and closets… or even your mother or grandmother's closet… for interesting items. Old handmade quilts, embroidered linens, well-worn furniture, and hand-me-down bedspreads can add a very authentic look. If you find a piece of furniture in the wrong color that would otherwise be perfect for your bedroom, give it a coat of paint. White, cream, and pastel shades of apricot, blue and pink can work well with shabby chic bedroom decor. One way of adding a nice look to old furniture is to paint the piece with a base shade, such as cream or white. Then, use a piece of sandpaper to rough up a few of the edges, especially in places where the furniture would have naturally received the most wear. Then, use a cloth to apply a small amount of light wood stain so that these areas appear more worn than the rest of the furniture piece.
Mix and Match
When decorating a shabby chic bedroom, you want to resist the temptation to include too many matching pieces, since using a wider variety of furniture pieces such as pieces of French furniture can add a more authentic look. Fabrics and colors that look nice together, but which do not match, is another decorating technique to use. For example, your grandmother's antique dresser, an end table found at a garage sale, and a headboard from the flea market could all work well together, even if the styles do not match. Using a crocheted doily on the end table and a vintage fabric runner on the dresser would look perfectly nice together in a shabby chic bedroom, even if they are not the same style.
Shabby Chic Wall Decor Ideas
There are many different ways that you can effectively decorate the walls in shabby chic bedroom. Old photographs, especially when placed in interesting vintage frames, always look nice. An old-style dress or hat could be hung from a peg rack, or you could hang a handmade quilt on the wall. Garden or nature-related items always work well, and could include framed floral prints, photographs of nature scenes, or even a framed collage made from old flower and vegetable seed packets.
Adding the Finishing Touches
Accessories that can work as part of your shabby chic bedroom decor include a beautiful vase of fresh flowers, or perhaps a collection of vintage glass bottles. Wicker baskets can add a very nice touch to tabletops and shelves, as can vintage tins and boxes. By using these containers, you can add some extra storage space to the room in addition to adding a touch of charm.
