Taking the Tiny out of your Bathroom

Let's face it, in many older homes, and in some newer ones, bathrooms and half-baths were added as afterthoughts. They were carved out of already existing rooms, and designed for one purpose. If you're tired of walking through the door and feeling claustrophobic, choose some of these redecorating ideas to offer yourself at least the illusion of more space.

Did you know that you can purchase certain bathroom fixtures on a tinier than usual scale? For example, manufacturers have designed smaller commodes that don't require large square water tanks attached. These water-saving fixtures are stylish and still work well. You may want to consult a plumber to install this one-piece toilet in your bathroom, however, because the water tank is placed inside the bathroom wall.

Another option that can work well in small bathrooms is pedestal or corner sinks. Add class and style without taking up any more space in your bathroom by choosing a trendy or elegant design. If you really want an upscale look, opt for a tiny vessel sink. Adding clear glass doors rather than a shower curtain can also help the room to seem a little larger; provided of course, that privacy is not a concern.

If you are critically short on space, consider investing in sliding or pocket doors. When opened, these won't cause the room's occupant to feel as though the walls are closing in. When open, they create less of a contrast in boundaries between the adjoining hall and bathroom, and the space won't seem as crowded or cramped.

You might be surprised to know how much color really does matter in adding the illusion of space to a little room. You can choose from a variety of decorating ideas, depending on your style and preference, which will allow you to add size without moving walls. For example, choose warm colors such as browns or earth tones, which will offer the appearance of larger, more comfortable surroundings.

If your personality or decorating tastes tend more toward bold or vivid colors, a bright red color can create the appearance of a larger space. If you don't like it, it isn't expensive to change - as long as you prime the wall first; painting over bright colors can sometimes require several coats of paint.

One excellent way to save on space without causing a huge expense is to install open wall cupboards or shelves for storing your towels. This can maximize storage without taking away valuable floor space with sink cabinets or traditional cabinet storage. If you do decide to use cabinet storage, find the most organized and compact storage possible to meet your needs.

Use designs that coordinate well with the room's colors and other furnishings; this can mean the difference between creating space and creating chaos. Don't be afraid to add focal points, choose decorative faucet fixtures, or decorate with a bit of flair; this can make the difference between a small bathroom that looks nice, and a creative little powder room that shows off your excellent taste.
