Decorating Tips for Small Bedrooms
by Joey Pebble

If you have a small bedroom, it can be difficult to create an atmosphere that is comfortable and attractive. You won’t have much space for decorative pieces, and the room itself might feel cramped or claustrophobic. However you don’t have to worry, the following tips will help you create the illusion of space, giving you the tools to create a relaxed and comfortable environment in even the smallest of rooms.

Layering

One perspective trick you can use to create the illusion of space is to layer solid colors, one on top of another. One example of this is to paint the bedroom walls one solid color, and then paint layered objects such as a set of drawers, or an overhead storage bin, with another solid color. The resulting effect can be fairly dramatic, with whole dimensions of visual space opening up.

Another example of layering is to separate sections of wall using dividing colors. This is especially good when you have a large, empty wall, which you want to paint a single color. The great blank canvas could overwhelm the space in a decidedly boring way, while patterned wall paper would go too far, filling it with far more details than it should contain. Instead, compromise by dividing the walls into squares, with contrasting white or cream colored lines breaking up the paint into square or brick pattern sections. The result will be a subtle but noticeable depth which will make the room seem bigger than it actually is.

Walls

In a small space, the walls are the most important decorating canvas that you have. Since floor space will be at a minimum, it is imperative that you decorate your walls in a balanced and strategic way, to create an attractive atmosphere.

One thing you have to be careful of, is to not to go too far, cluttering up the walls with every interesting poster or print you can find. Clutter makes a room seem full. Instead, select one or two tasteful items, which predominantly contain colors that contrast with the walls. This will serve to add visual interest to the room, while still maintaining the emptiness which will increase the virtual space.

That Cozy Feeling

It’s important to have the right perspective on a small bedroom. While it can feel cramped, it can also be a cozy space, with walls that seem to wrap around you in a warm and inviting embrace. You should try to enhance this effect with the decorative endeavors that you make in the room.

Soft textures are one way to make a small bedroom feel cozy rather than cramped. If the walls feel like their closing in, why not coat them in silk or satin, so that the experience is more a caress than a blow. Pillows should abound, with throws and wraps layered luxuriantly about the space to complete the look.

A tiny bedroom doesn’t have to be a curse. There are a variety of tricks you can use to open up the space and make it feel larger and more comfortable. By embracing the small size of the room, you can use its inherent shape to your advantage, creating an environment which is both cozy and comfortable.
